We took our "dog and pony show" on the road a week ago and went to the Scottish Fest in Prosser, Washington for the first time. It is a small affair (like the Athena show we do every year, not at all like the huge King County fair last summer). We had our Turnbull clan booth and got all dressed up. Everyone was wonderful and the organizer made a point of especially inviting us to come back next year. Bill and Pat Trimble came over for a few hours, too.

The Prosser Scottish Fest is known as “the place that blows stuff up.” One of the things that distinguishes this festival from other games is the The Anvil Launch. This involves placing a large blacksmith anvil weighing up to 100 pounds on top of an ignition platform charged with black powder. The powder is ignited and the anvil is thrust as high as 125 feet into the air. The earth literally shakes; and the deafening boom, it is said, can be heard from as far away as 10 miles as the concussion reverberates between the Rattlesnake and Horse Heaven Hills.
