Imagination

Where would we be, if not for imagination.

Alexander Graham Bell, a Scot, who changed our world, invented things that most of us now could not manage to be without.

In 1850 as a wee boy, Aleck, as he was called by his father, wandered away from a family picnic at Ferny Ferry in Scotland. The golden wheat field beckoned to him and he wandered deeper in the thick wheat until he was lost, and lay sobbing until he finally fell asleep. Awaken by the voice of his father yelling for him, young Aleck ran to his father's arms and safety, but he was to never forget this first memory lesson. The impulse and interest to wander, imagine, deep curiosity of sounds and silence as a child would set the pace of great success and sometimes unattainable dreams.

How many times in a day do you see someone with a phone to their ear, or see a child or adult with a head set on listening to their favourite music, sit and watch our world around us on the television? A simple transmission line changed to an electrical impulse and then changed back into the original sound was responsible for what we now enjoy on a daily basis. The new era abounds with Spirit sending us messages from Mars. SETI sits with it's ears trained to the universe listening for sounds from other worlds.

The Wright brothers get most of the credit for flight, but at the same time, Bell's biplane became the first to fly a kilometre. The Wrights plane actually flew two months later in Paris.

At Bells funeral, Thomas Edison said, "he brought the human family closer in touch".

Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, buried in Canada, and wrote his own epitaph, " died a citizen of the United States."

A man of the world.

Missouri Tartan Day Festival

The Missouri Tartan Day Festival will be held on April 2,3,& 4, 2004,  everyone is invited to participate.
