BULLSEYE

In the article “What Happened to the Clans”, October issue of Bullseye, the word tanistry was used, and several of our membership have asked for a definition.

Word definition:  Tanistry… Anciently, a Celtic system of chieftainship, and life-tenure, especially in Ireland, by which the headship of the sept or clan, while modified by the claims of birth, was decided by election in the lifetime of the chief:  tanist is the noun.

Outback Scottish Surf Carnival

Kynuna is a small town in the middle of nowhere in the Queensland, Australian outback. Soft enchanting tones of bagpipes are heard drifting over the sand dunes. How can that be?

The event is the Surf Carnival, but the nearest beach is 600 KM away. This is the most unusual carnival on earth. It was started in 1960; it is where there are no beaches, only drought stricken lands where there is never a drop of rain. Why you ask yourself would they do this?

Held each year in April, the visitor flock to the area in their cars, caravans, trucks, motor homes and buses.

There is only one roadhouse and a few homes in Kynuna that is 166 km from Winton, (which Dawn Day has been telling us about).

The Blue Heeler roadhouse is the only watering hole around and although there is not much water, the next best thing is the local beer.  The bizarre surf carnival has 2 pipers who lead the parade and play during the events such as a hay bale relay, sandbag relay, surfboard relay and a boat rescue, all taking place on a gravel road or the nearby sand dunes of the outback.

When asked why they do this it was said that this wonderfully strange get together is to raise money for the “Flying Doctors” service, which is the only medical service to the outback and its people.

Bylaws Referendum Almost Unanimous

We are pleased to announce that the referendum on the changes to the TCA bylaws have passed by an almost unanimous 99.1% margin. The bylaws are important because they are not only a governing guide for TCA but they help focus our association's priorities. The changes to the bylaws define some previously ambiguous areas and make it easier for TCA to be an international association.

Congratulations to all who participated in this project to help make our association better.

All members on the rolls at the time of the referendum received a printed copy of the new bylaws. Additionally, the full text of the bylaws is available in the members-only section of the TCA website at;
