Meet our Members
My Fathers Family, by Adele Turnbull Jeffras

William G. Turnbull and Catherine Fea were
born in Scotland. They came to the United States and were living
somewhere in the St. Genevie, Missouri. area when they met and were
married September 29, 1859. They settled in Washington County, in
Missouri. Later, William G. Turnbull and Catherine’s father went into
timber and sawmill business at what was known later as the old Caldwell
Mill on Indian Creek, Missouri.
To this union several children were born. One of
the children was John James Turnbull. He married Emmaline Douglas, April
21, 1887. They had eleven children, with two dying at birth.
They lived on the
Metcalf place down the hill from Metcalf school. Later, they moved to
the area around Potosi, Missouri. They farmed in this area. As soon as
some of the sons were old enough, they went to Granite City, Illinois
and worked in the steel mills until they retired. Most all of the
children married and lived in the Missouri area. They have used the
Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Potosi, Missouri. |

There is still space available for about 30 family
members. Just before Emily passed away, she was living with a son and
family at the old Family Farm. They had a fire and the house burned
down. They lost all family pictures and the Family Bible.
Part of this information is by word of mouth, part
written and included in the history book and some from Washington
County, Missouri records.
The last one (Andy) of this families children
passed away February 9, 1997. Most children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren live in the Potosi, Missouri area — others in Illinois,
Ohio, Arizona and Maryland.
It is interesting that only a few years ago, one of
John Turnbull’s brothers, Chilton Turnbull, who lived in Montana, had a
daughter named Adele -- Lawrence’s daughter is also Adele --by chance
that would happen.
