Bullseye                                                                    March 2005

From the President

by Wally Turnbull

Every year thousands of people of Scottish descent visit Scotland.  Like emigrants from all nations, we want to see where we came from.  We don’t usually expect to find relatives but we do hope to at least bump into someone with the same name.

As Turnbulls, we are fortunate to know when and where we came from.  Our origins are old enough to be deeply rooted in history yet recent enough to be quite clearly traceable.

Many good publications and web sites provide visitors to Scotland with wonderful descriptions and background of places to visit and things to see.  The problem is that it is often too much, especially for a first-time visitor or a short visit.

In order to help our members know and be able to visit the places of greatest Turnbull-specific significance we are beginning a series of articles called Turnbull Trails to be published in the Bullseye, on the TCA website, and then as a booklet.  These articles will first cover Turnbull trails in Scotland and then include sites of historical significance to Turnbulls around the world.  We solicit your contributions and additions to this ongoing project.

Each Turnbull Trails article will describe a place of historical significance to Turnbulls and will discuss why it is historically significant, the Turnbull connection, what is there today, how to get there, what else to see and do in the area, where to stay and where to eat nearby.

We start, naturally, at the beginning, with Bedrule.

Letters to the Editor

While this is usually the place for your letters to the editor, this month’s Bullseye is taking a new twist.  This is a letter from your editor.  Many of you know Janet Turnbull Schwierking is our TCA secretary and until this month has been the editor of the Bullseye.  Janet has worked unselfishly to bring you a Bullseye with interesting articles about TCA members, Turnbulls from around the world, and interesting stories about Scotland and our heritage.

Don’t worry, this is in no way a farewell to Janet!  While I will be editing the Bullseye, Janet will stay on as Associate Editor.  I don’t think that there would be a Bullseye without her!  But Janet has other passions, as well.  And one of those is with the importance of the genealogy records collected by TCA and made available to our members.  In addition to helping with the Bullseye, Janet will not only continue as TCA Secretary, but she is also now the TCA Genealogist.

I hope to get to know you as Janet has.  In keeping with her tradition of the Meet the Members column, I would like to invite you to contribute to the newsletter.  We would like to include stories about family reunions, weddings, births, deaths and any other special event you may be involved with.  If it is special to you, it is important to us.

Parents, grandparents, this is a perfect opportunity for you to send in those adorable baby photos.  Include TCA in your list of those to receive birth and wedding announcements.

Tell us about special awards, the 30th birthday party, or maybe it’s the big 50th.  If writing is not your thing, send us just the facts and we will turn it into a story.  Let’s work together to include more about the extended TCA family in the Bullseye.
