April 6 is Tartan Day

The Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed on April 6, 1320.  In the US, over 20 million people claim Scottish descent.  And so in 1998 the United States joined Canada and Scotland in celebrating a National Tartan Day.

“Whereas these numerous individuals, clans, societies... do not let the great contributions of the Scottish people go unnoticed:  Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Senate designates April 6 of each year as “National Tartan Day.”

 A Special Flower.....

Dear Cousins and Friends,

I decided to plan ahead and prepare some information when I got my last call and will be happy to rest.

This is to let you know that I went “out the Back Door” on March 12, 2005.  I had a great ride and lived every minute of it.

I leave my faith and love to all!

Myreda A. Jeffras

Myreda Adele Turnbull Jeffras leaves her family and friends with the above letter.  Adele was a founding member of TCA.  From Severna Park, MD and formally from Eastport, MD, Adele was known for her years of support of the activities at Eastport United Methodist Church, especially the annual peach festival where her pickled beets were in great demand and she served as chairman of the event.

Born May 17, 1918, in Anthonies Mill, Mo., she attended schools in Sullivan, Mo.  During her career in education, she taught in one-room schools in Missouri..  She was a kindergarten teacher at Germantown East Elementary School and principal at Pershing Hill Elementary School in Fort Meade.  She was a member of Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society Int’l., Soroptimist Club, College Women’s Club, Christian Women, Eastport Senior Citizens, M. I. Hummel Club, as well as Maryland State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers and Turnbull Clan Association.

Her motto was “Read, Sew and Go.”  Among her interests were quilting, reading, traveling, cooking, playing cards and collecting pattern glass pitchers.  She was also a collector of Hummel figurines, which she donated to The Hummel Museum, Inc. in New Braunfels, Texas.

We join TCA secretary, Janet Schwierking, in saying that “TCA has lost a founding member with a heart of gold.”
