BULLSEYE

Riley’s Ride (continued from page 1)

played in the early development of this district and to honor those who tried to rescue him under very difficult conditions. This is a four day event, winding through narrow trails and over very rough and steep terrain, ending at the Corryong Cemetery for the official launch of the “Snowy River Festival.”

Jack is thought to be the stockman in Banjo Paterson’s Man from Snowy River.

“...He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciusko’s side,  Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough,  Where a horse’s hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride...” (Man from Snowy River)

Mavis Turnbull Lockwood participated in the 2004 Riley’s Ride.  Mavis, 77, the oldest of the riders, made the trip on  her Australian spotted pony, Freckles.  Freckles was the smallest pony in the ride.

Mavis trained Freckles for 12 weeks before the ride, by taking him down a bluff to get him used to climbing.  After the second day of the ride, many of the larger horses gave up.  The other riders said “Freckles was the bravest of them all.”
