Anecdote*: Alicia or Alice Lamotte (some records show her as Alice and others show her as Alicia) was married to Auguste or August Lamotte (again records vary showing his first name in these two forms. I think the reason for these differences in names is that Auguste was born in France and ethnically French and would have "frenchified" her name and in counter of this there was a tendency of the Anglo-Saxon establishment to anglicise non standard English names. We know that Alicia or Alice was not French and believed that she was Australian. They lived and died in Kalgoorlie however came from there from elsewhere as did everyone at that time however the family subsequently lived in Kalgoorlie for the next 2 -3 generations to some extent.

References to her maiden name refer to her as Alice Sprawled. There is a copy of her Form of Registration as an alien in 1916. As her husband was French he had to register as an alien and because she married him she became French by marriage and also had to register despite being Australian by birth. They had to attend in person before the member of the police in charge of their closest police station.These papers contained a lot of useful information (including the region in France Auguste came from and a quick search has revealed a lot of promising records) and also physical descriptions, finger prints and birthdates and places.

On Alicia’s Form of application for registration (she is listed as Alicia on this document), her birth place is given as Snug River and her birth date is given as 15th December 1878. Snug is a Tasmanian town just adjacent to Longley.Other information on the application is her finger print,, that she couldn't sign her name, that she was French by marriage and under personal descriptions remarks "married to a Frenchman", must have been like a mark of Cain the way it was written. She was aft 5 tall, grey eyes, grey hair. On Augustes application , he had been born on 6th,June 1866 in Lyon France and entered into the commonwealth on 18 may 1881 (when he was 15), that he was 6 ft 7 inchs tall, grey eyes brown hair and medium build with an anchor tattoo on left forearm (Our family history's that he was a French sailor who jumped ship in the goldrush and the anchor suggests that this is true however the age he entered the commonwealth he was very young to be a sailor I would have thought given the sailing time.) There is an interesting cross linkage with Edward Sproul apparently being a master and being Alicia/Alices uncle. Is this the mechanism by which Alice met him as a friend or employee of her Uncle or did Auguste ever come to Hobart at all. His occupation is put as a miner

I have a death record for him in 1921 in Coolgardie and his wife is listed as Alice Sprawled. I sometimes wonder that perhaps this mistake may have been deliberate (she had married a French sailor who was 12 years older than her) or accidentally (not as romantic but possibly more probable). I haven't found a marriage certificate so do not know what they were doing between when Alicia was living in Hobart and Auguste arrive in Australia and then appeared as a married couple in my records in Kalgoorlie.¹

Anecdote*: With respect to Edward Sproul (Son of Adam Sproul and presumable brother to Adam William Sproul), these are the shipwreck references . Florence. Passage boat. Unregistered. Master Edward Sproule. Wrecked between Ferguson’s Point and Twelve Acre Paddock, North West Bay, Tasmania, 25 May 1876. Crew saved. (Note the "e", could be mistake)

Laurel. Ketch, about 6 tons. Unregistered. Master Edward Sproul. Broke her mooring at Snug, North West Bay, Tasmania; drifted across the Derwent, ashore on the Iron Pot, then disappeared, presumably having broken up, 15 March 1903.

On 5 July 1924, under Master Edward Sproul, rolled onto her side and sank in a squall off The Pigeon Holes, three miles from the South Arm jetty, Tasmania. The master and a son drowned. The Mystery was raised by the ketches Shannon and Huon Chief, and towed back to Hobart
A family tragedy there.

Mystery. Auxiliary ketch, 12 gross. # 57625. Built River Derwent, Tasmania, 1882; reg. Hobart 7/1890. Lbd 43.4 x 12.3 x 3.9ft. Ashore in a gale, Little Taylor's Bay, Bruny Island, Tasmania, 14 January 1926. The hull was apparently dragged ashore and allowed to rot away.²
