William Benbow^1,2,3

Anecdote*: Rebecca Jarvis entered into a de facto relationship possibly around 1832, with William Benbow. Benbow was an ex-convict who as a 27 year old boatman from Worcester was tried in Worcestershire in 1822 & found guilty of stealing 17 Trusses of Hay from a cow shed at Shrub's Hill - valued at Twenty shillings, the property of Archibald Cameron. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He was also indicted, but not tried, for stealing a Deal Board valued at 4 shillings, the property of Richard Heming & Henry Rowe. He apperared to receive his sentence with much pleasure, and thanked the Chairman. He was transported aboard the "Competitor (1)" leaving England on 18th March 1823 and arrived in Hobart on 3rd Aug. 1823. William was described as five foot two & a half inches (1.59 metres) brown hair & brown eyes, and of stout build. He left behind a father, who was a glovemaker; a wife and 3 children in Worcester.
Wm's record of conduct continued to grow during his seven years of conviction in Tasmania: Stealing, Disobedience of orders; Threatening his Master (58 lashes & chain gang 6 months); Defrauding his Master of sums of money (12 months chain gang) Absonding from Chain Gang twice (50 lashes). He finished his term on 31st October 1829, and apparently took up with Rebecca Jarvis around 1832. They purchased and sold parcels of land around Hobart during the period 1831 to 1836. William Benbow was a baker up to 1836. On 21 Sept that year he leased 30 acres at Snug from James Aske for 14 years at a price of 17 pounds and a yearly peppercorn.
Thos Pierce an Inmate, Snug River, was informant of Fdrk Turnbull's birth. He seems to be connected with the Jarvis family on several occasions. A convict named Thos. Pierce was 46 when tried in 1830 & as a clerk to Edward Messiter Dyne solicitor, he was witness for Rebecca Jarvis to a land transaction of 30 acres in Kingborough on Snug Rivulet on 7 Dec 1837. The land was purchased from J. Waugh, formerly a private in the NSW Battalion. Two earlier conveyances by Rebecca were both in 1834 the first in Warwick Street Hobart Town where she paid 60 pounds to John Brentnall for an allotment, and the second Rebecca sold an allotment in Salisbury St in Hobart Town to S. Martin. There was no mention of William Jarvis in any of these transactions. Rebecca & Wm. Benbow had 4 sons and daughter. The only birth registered was that of Searsfield, the rest being listed in the Baptism Records of St.Davids Church of England.
During 1836 William may have left the Bakery and decided to try farming. The Benbow/Jarvis property on the left hand side (coming from Cemetery) after crossing Snug River, and ran down to the River. They grew vegetables and potatoes. The old house, formerly lived in by Wm. Jarvis Junior, weass built over, but is believed to still contain some of the original house. Wm. Also had a large sailing vessel which he used to take firewood up the D'Entrecasteau Channel to Hobart. In Mar. 1843 he applied for 100 acres of virgin forest joining the 30 acres, the land was surveyed off in his name, the transaction was never finalised as he died before it was granted. Wm. Drowned on 27 March 1843, the inquest being held the next day at Rebecca's house.
Rebecca Benbow (nee Jarvis) testified: The deceased Wm. Benbow was my husband, he was forty three years old. About half past three o'clock yesterdayIwas in the house when a man who works for Felix connolly came & said I was to send Brewer down, that he believed either the boat or the craft was swamped, so I sent my boy down to Brewer & heard no more of the matter until Felix Connolly came up about an hour afterwards & told me my husband was drowned. I went down immediately to the mouth of the river where I fainted away and do not know what occurred until I found myself at home and the dead body of my husband in the house. The body was in respect & I examined it, there were no marks of violence whatever on it. My husband was quite sober when I last saw him alive about two o'clock yesterday. Rowe was also quite sober. I am not aware of any quarrel between Rowe & my husband. They were on perfect good terms at dinner yesterday & have always been so far as I know. I have no reason to supposed that my husband'' death was caused otherwide than by accidentally. X Rebecca Benbow (her mark).
It is interesting to note that his employee who was with him at the time of the drowning, and tried to save him, was one Henry Rowe. (Also the name of the man from whom William stole in Worcester!) Wm. Benbow was buried 30 Mar 1843 according to St.David's Church of England rites at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. (Snug was not opened until the 1850s.).³
