He built a house on the old property & eventually planted an apple orchard. He later bought out Joe & Stan's share as they had no interest in the orchard. Stan went into the hotel business at Cygnet & Joe went to work at the hydro station at Queenstown. Frederick married Mary Agnes Brennan & had son Frederick Douglas born 19 Aug 1899 at Lyell.
  The old homestead belonging to Frederick Snr. was just a few hundred yards from Ern's house. After it burnt down, Ern's children used to follow the plough as the soil was being turned, & find all sorts of things like broken crockery, coins & even a gold ring. The orchard was still producing in 1985, however it may now be subdivided for residential blocks (1998).
  They were champion axemen - as attested to by the following obituary when Ern died in May 1965:
  "The funeral in Hobart yesterday of Mr.Ernest Henry Turnbull of New Town, one of Tasmania's former champion sawyers & axement, was attended by many sporting personalities.Mr. Turnbull, formerly of Gordon, died in Hobart on Saturday aged 71. A member of a well known D'Entrecasteaux Channel milling family, Mr.Turnbull with his brothers William & the late Joseph & Stan, excelled at sawing & chopping. A great sawyer, he set a record by winning the single-handed championship at Ulverstone four years in succession from 1926-1929. With his brother Stan and later his son Geoff, he also won many double-handed sawing events in various parts of the State. In 1921 at the Geeveston Sports Club carnival, William won the 12", 15" & 18" chopping events, Joseph & Ernest the double-handed sawing, & Ernest the single-handed sawing.Mr.Turnbull also won many chipping events at sporting meetings in the South & North-West Coast. Born at Gordon, Mr.Turnbull conducted a sawmill in the Channel district until retiring about 3 years ago. He leaves a wife, two sons Geoff & Terence, & 3 daughters - Mesdames D.Moate (Moonah) C. Morrisby (Goodwood) & J. Hartley (NSW)"

  "CARNIVAL MAY BE HELD IN HONOUR OF TURNBULL BROTHERS:
  The name of the famous Tasmanian family of axemen, the Turnbull brothers, may be perpetuated by a special carnival named in their honour during the 1966-67 season. The brothers Joe, Bill, Ernie & Stan were known throughout Australia for their brilliant chopping.Delegates at the annual meeting of the Association were told by the Secretary (Mr.A.P.O'Byrne) that if such a carnival were conducted more than 100 of Australia's best axemen would d compete. Mr.O'Byrne suggested that events should include 10" and 12" standing, 12" underhand, and a single-handed sawing contest in which the Turnbull brothers were adept.
  Great Season: The carnival, if arranged, would be the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. The winner of each of the four events might go to N.Z. for a fortnight. ..... The President, Mr.H.K.Fenton described the season as the best on record. The 2,000 chop at Bushy Park in January was the biggest in Tasmania & was sponsored by the State Government ....." The Turnbull girls, Elizabeth & Louise, went to the mainland & lived in Melbourne. Ern's daughter Rita as a girl wrote to another girl in Melbourne for years before she found out she was her cousin - her aunt Louise's daughter, who later came to visit them in Tasmania. Elizabeth was registered Turnbull at birth and was later burnt to death. Her death certificate states "Elizabeth Turnbull also known as Benbow."
  Frederick Henry Turnbull, was born 29th July 1845 in Hobart. His birth certificate (in which he is unnamed has a later notation "Baptised St.David's - Frederick Henry") lists his father as John Turnbull (farmer) and his mother as Rebecca Jarvis. At his baptism when he was 2 months old the parents are listed as John (a boatman) & Rebecca Turnbull of North West Bay (Snug). He was only 14 when both Rebecca Jarvis & John Turnbull died in 1859 three months apart.
  Turnbulls lived around the Middleton/Gordon orchard area and were still in residence in 1984 when we visited. As many as six related families live within a quarter of a mile radius. Frederick died 6 years later on 25th November 1917, aged 77, at the home of his daughter Isabella (married Holt) 216 Campbell St. Hobart, leaving 7 male children & 3 females still living. He is buried in Snug cemetery.^3,4
