(Witness) Immigration: He witnessed the immigration of William Turnbull on 11 July 1786; Probably as a result of the famines of the 1780's in Scotland, William Turnbull, together with his wife and three sons decided to emigrate.
In 1786, they took passage on the brig "Lily" to Halifax, arriving on 11th July, accompanied by Mrs. Turnbull's sister, Helen Brown, (1734-1807).. A fellow passenger was the Rev. James MacGregor, the first minister in Pictou County.
William Turnbull and his family were the first settlers of bay View, four miles from Digby, on the west side of digby Gut, the narrows connecting the Bay of Fundy with Annapolis Basin. They built their first log house on the corner where the Lighthouse Road now joins the shore Road, on land presently occupied by the Rev. L.R. Atkinson.C. 1960.

Married Margaret about 1845. Lived in Haverton Hill like his elder brother Thomas, until about 1847/8 (the date approximately when the glassworks was under Cutheberton, Carter and Thorman, then soon bought by Jas. COUPER and run by WALTON). It may have been the new regime under COUPER which stimulated George and Thomas Lee to move away?

The family may have taken a partnership in the Carr Hill glassworks, Gateshead, about this time and George came to manage it? Sheriff Hill is a neighbouring area to Carr Hill today, to the south of modern Gateshead city centre. His brother Matthew was also in Gateshead around this time and may have been a partner.

George is a 'Flint Glass Maker', whereas it is his brotherMatthew who is the 'glass manufacturer' (by now also resident in Southwick). George's sons are working in the family glassworks: John (FGM), Thomas (FGM) and George E. (Glass cutter).
