  • Anecdote*: John Turnbull--At age 10 John went to sea on sailing ships for many years. He had eyesight problems which stopped him from getting his Captain’s papers. He then took employment with the North British Railway for 6 years. His eyesight again blocked him from getting his papers.

    In March 1903 he sailed for Canada, arriving in Wolseley, Saskatchewan in April 1903. He immediately went to work for Alex Kindred in the Moffat District. In Oct. of that year he bought land which contained a house and a sod barn. The first winter was a tough one with a lot of snow, to the roof top. John’s mother (Jane Todd-Turnbull) arrived in 1904 and returned to Scotland in 1905.

    In 1905 John constructed new buildings. The lumber was shipped from British Columbia by his brother Capt. William Turnbull. The lumber was hauled 10 miles from Wolseley, mostly by oxen.

    His mother returned in 1908. The same year Helen Milne Burnett arrived from Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. John and Helen were married on March 17, 1909. Together they planted trees and experimented with grains and grasses

    John was very involved in the school district. He was also a Sunday School superintendent. As a layman he often took the service and on occasion took the service for the prisoners in the Wolseley jail.

    John’s Mother passed away at the farm in 1915. John and Helen retired in 1941, First to Regina SK, then finally to Saskatoon 5 months later. John died August 12, 1960. Helen died Feb. 19, 1971.

He entered business on his own in 1884, engaging in general agricultural pursuits and stock-raising. He made a specialty of feeding cattle and hogs, as well as tilling the land, and was also a President of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of La Prairie Township for 24 years, a member of the Marshall County Board of Supervisors for 18 years and President of the State Bank of Speer for 14 years. On September 09, 1886, he married Clara Jane Noel, in Lacon, IL. She was born July 21, 1863, in Ogle County, Illinois, to M. F. and Margaret Householder Noel, and was educated at Mount Morris College. They had four children. Following the death of John Turnbull, Clara married J. Webster Greene, also a farmer and cattle raiser of La Prairie Center, who had been widowed by the death of his wife, Alma Webber Greene, daughter of Addison Porter and Rachel Naomi Calder Webber. He died March 23, 1936, and Clara Noel Turnbull Greene died March 23, 1940. Both John and Clara were members of the La Prairie United Presbyterian Church and are buried in the La Prairie United Presbyterian Cemetery.1
