- Anecdote*: Leonard Charles Humphry Duke was born in 1932. In South Melbourne he attended Eastern Rd. State School, then In 1940 the family moved to Wilks Street, North Caulfield 7 miles from town! He & Lil took up skating at St.Moritz St Kilda during the years just after the war & it became Len's passion. He joined the Monarchs Ice Hockey Club & was one of the foundation members of Melbourne Amateur Speed Skating Club along with David Morgan his longtime school friend. Len wrote the first Constitution of the Club typed up by his 14 yr.old sister Lil. His bedroom was set up like an office complete with filing cabinets & everyone had strict instructions not to disturb anything as he knew exactly where everything was and if one piece of paper got mixed up with another it would ruin everything!
Len & Lil represented Victoria at Speed Skating several times. In Sydney in 1950 at 17 he won 3 SENIOR championships in one night setting new Australian Records although still a Junior. In 1953 in Hobart Tasmania Lil won an Australian Title. They both held Australian & Victorian titles over the years, a fact which their father was proud to point out to visitors!
When he was 20 he fractured his neck when he was thrown over the bonnet of a car which knocked him off his bike. He was in plaster from neck to waist for months He married Margaret Cromb in 1954 & their son Len 3rd was born in April 1955. They had 4 more children over the next 6 years , Joseph, who Verlie, Elizabeth & Tania & built a "contemporary" house in the new suburb of Glen Waverley when the roads were unmade & very rough. The Credit Squeeze in the early 1960s caused the loss of Len's job, his car & his home. They rented in Caulfield while he tried to get another job but everyone told him he was overqualified. He sold encyclopedeas & moved to Redcliffe in Queensland where there was more of a market.
Margaret left the family for another man in Queensland & as Len couldn't look after the kids and go out selling at night the children were brought home to Victoria by their paternal grandmother till Len came down. Margaret collected the youngest Tania after a while & Len tried for years to keep the others together till eventually Margaret came to take the girls back. As they were getting into the car to take them away, young Lennie looked so sad Len said "Do you want to go too" - and of course he went. Len was brokenhearted to lose his kids as he really loved them. The first Christmas without them he was staying at his parent's holiday house at Kilcunda in Sth.Gippsland with some of the family & looked really forlorn as his nephews & nieces opened their Christmas presents. A few years later he married Glenyse Harris & had three lovely kids so once again he was surrounded by a family he loved. As a young man he was always interested in joining the Police force but at the time the regulation height was 6 ft. & he was 5ft.10 ins, but was able to become a member of the Commonwealth Police Force in his 40s due to the minimum height being reduced. He was co-ordinator of the Citizens Radio Emergency Minitors Council involving 2-way radio & Search & Rescue . It was a shock when he was struck down in 1982 with a brain tumour at 49 & had a big operation which gave him back to his young family with sight & hearing for about 6 months. He was quite a solid build & when it got too big a job for Glenys to dress & feed him & they had to shift house over Christmas 1983, she had to have him admitted to Royal Melbourne hospital again & he never left . His mother visited him the year before when he was first ill & his sister Lil & eldest daughters Verlie (she hadn't seen him for 17 years) & later Elizabeth made the trip from Qld. taking her 3rd baby - the only one of his grandchildren he ever saw His elder son Len contacted him so it was nice they made contact again, as they grew up believing he had deserted them. He died 20 March 1984 at the age of 50, when Rebekkah was 9, Sarah 7 & Saul 4. Members of the Drug Squad were well represented at his funeral. He had donated the Len Duke Perpetual Ice Racing Trophy to the Victorian Speed Skating Union & his wife Glenys returned his cups to the Union after he died. When one of the officials asked if anyone in his family wanted them, Lil collected 2 trophies & gave them to his daughters Verlie & Elizabeth who were interested in the family history. The other had been joined to the Duke Trophy to make it bigger, so his name lives on in the skating world.5,6

Leonard Henry Theodore Duke1,2,3,4,5

- Birth*: Leonard Henry Theodore Duke was born on 2 February 1912 in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.2,3,4,5
- Marriage*: He married Lillian Joyce Beattie, daughter of Andrew Charles Beattie and Ruby Kathleen Isobel Turnbull, on 14 May 1932 in West, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.5,2
- Death*: He died on 27 March 1980 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, at age 68.2,3,4,5
- Anecdote*: Leonard Henry Theodore DUKE was born in South Melbourne Victoria 2nd February 1912. His father Humphry Henry James DUKE was a bag dealer & his mother was Idunna SCOTT (Thygesen). He lived most of his early days in South Melbourne. His father died when he was 5 & his mother remarried & had 2 more children, but eventually divorced. All the Duke children were influenced in their love of Australiana by T.C.Alsopp, Head Teacher of Eastern Rd. State School in South Melbourne, where they attended. He taught them Australian songs & poetry & encouraged them to attend operas at the PlayhouseTheatre down by the Yarra River. Len used lines from "The Rubyiat of Omah Khyam" in conversation. "The bird of time has but a little time to fly, and Lo the bird is on the wing" was one he used often & and "The bird is on the wing" was enough to say it was getting late. He knew Banjo Paterson's "Man from Snowy River" & "Clancy of the Overflow" which he taught his daughter Lil. On Sundays as a youngster Len joined the underprivileged kids for breakfast at the nearby Tri-boys Society, and when his stepfather started shouting, he slept with his hat on in case he had to get out quickly! When he was about 11 his mother had the Bluebell Cafe, a Confectionery shop & Tea Rooms in Clarendon St. Sth. Melbourne & kept pies & bread under the counter for Len's friends, among whom were later World Champion Billiard player Walter Lindrum & radio & TV personality Frank Rich. Len & his brother Humphry missed having a father & he was a manly little boy who always looked afterhis sister, more like a big brother. He spent time at the docks (now built on for the tramways in the Banks/Wells St. area) round the campfire with an ex policeman listening to the stories the men told. For pocket money he sold papers.
He was good at sport & got out of bed with the flu to do his Bronze Medallion in swimming He won a swimming race in a school competition & gave the prize to the girl who came second because he was, as the teacher put it "a little gentleman" When he was about 11 he met Lillian Beattie, then 9 years old & a few years later they started going out together. He was quite a whiz with the billiard cue & would often win 5 shillings to take her to the pictures & buy chocolates. He borrowed 1 pound from his sister Jessie "to buy a wedding ring for Lily"& they were married on 14 May 1932 when he was 20 & she not quite 16. They moved into a 2 roomed cottage in Sth Melbourne with rent subsidised by the Government. Len worked on the construction of St.Kilda Rd. for sustenance (Susso) during the Depression and in the early 1930s when their first baby Lennie was one year old they had only enough money to buy an egg, so they fed the baby & had nothing to eat themselves. He acted as midwife for the birth of his daughter Lil above his mother-in-law's fruitshop in West Melbourne. During their early married life he was a foreman in Boles Icecream Factory in Fitzroy & lived just behind the factory so jumped the fence to come home at night, often with a whole bucket of icecream for his kids. While living in South Melbourne he drove Yellow Cab before 1941 then shifted "out bush" to North Caulfield, seven miles from the city & a place with a huge long backyard. He was inducted into the Army during World War 2 on Nov 1942 & served inAustralia as Driver Mechanic at Port Kembla Workshops till February 1946. According to Army doctors he had flat feet so couldn't serve overseas. After discharge he went back to driving taxis for Red Top & in 1954 got a taxi licence so could drive anytime. A couple of times he was bashed & robbed. He eventually left the taxis & went into the tree removal business with his own truck in the 1950s. When the Queen came to Australia he & his son Fran loaded up the truck with fruit boxes & sold them for 5/- (50c) for people to stand on, then collected them after the parade passed & resold them further up the line. He taught them a family whistle which he used whenever he wanted them & they could be anywhere in the world & hear that whistle & see see a member of the Duke family. His daughter Lil's family then passed it on to the Dillons. He admired Richard Tauber & knew all his songs, which he then taught to Fran, who later studied singing whilst overseas in his early twenties. Weekends were for families to get together & Sunday was the day for a roast dinner and working in his big garden. At night the uncles, aunties & cousins came for a cold tea and the children put on a concert first, then the adults sang in harmony all the old songs their mother taught them. His great loves were football & fishing. He was a great South Melbourne footie supporter (Australian Rules) but never got to see them win a premiership. He fished with his brother Humphry & Charlie Cumberland and later his grandson Steve Dillon. They were in his black rubber dinghy once & were rammed by a power boat out on Port Phillip Bay off St. Kilda Pier. Steve was thrown into the water & Len knocked back into the boat. After Steve got them back to shore Len drove to the police Station but couldn't remember the accident. He spent months in a head to waist plaster with a broken neck Years later. he & Steve went to Melbourne from Qld. for the boat owner's trial - they'd all been downstairs drinking & had no look-out. He got a serttlement of a few thousand dollars & gave some to Steve.
He was a self taught golfer & won several golf trophies in his thirties, & for the years leading up to 1979 won the Billiards & Snooker championships at Buderim.. He was so good the Buderim Club decided in his last year to bar him from the Championship because "he always won" His sayings were gems: "Just because the tent's small don't think the show's not good" - "No dogs in single rooms". "When the lighthouse shines across the bay, come home my love, come home" - "Snorkey Marney of the Burrough, fought 3 rounds in a paper bag with a monkey & came out without a scratch." When asked what anything was it was always "A wigwam for a goose's bridle" & if something was lost if would be"Hanging on a skyhook" later abbreviated as all his speech was, to "Hangin'". He couln't read a note of music but could play any tune on the mouth organ or accordian.
He loved his 16 grandchildren & always had time for them. He always did a tapdance for them & had a Donald Duck imitation which accompanied wild tickling.
He loved taking everyone for fishing trips at Kilcunda, mushrooming around the old mineshafts of Wonthaggi, and counter lunches for everydone at the Miners Rest Hotel. His one aim in life was to win Tatts, now Gold Lotto, & take all the family on a big trip or all live together in a big house. He had nicknames for all the family, most girls in the Duke family ended up being called Annie Kate, Katie Annie or just Kate. He was a whiz with Cockney rhyming slang & would come in with Steve after being out fishing and tell him "Better lemon squash (wash) the german bands & plates of meat" (hands & feet) & as Steve became more used to it, he'd just say "Swan, give the germans & plates a lemon". In his business of lopping & felling trees when work was slack he cleaned out sheds, garages, houses & couldn't throw out 'good stuff'. It ended up in the sideway & shed at Wilks St then transferred to Kilcunda when they retired there for a few years, then some made its way to Qld. He wrote a letter during the height of the 1973/74 Xmas Brisbane floods when they were living at Miami on the Gold Coast. Its a classic - describing almost minute by minute the change in events - how the rain was getting heavier, the radio had now gone out, their boa twas tied to the verandah post as the waters were rising in the street & he said "Anybody who lives in Queensland (during the cyclone season) would have to be homeless, or Stateless, or mad!" He would've been proud to know his great-grandfather William Duke came out from Ireland as a young man & became a now-famous artis, with his paintings hanging in two art galleries & museums in Tasmania, one in Geleong & two in the National Library in Canberra, along with several in the W.L.Crowther Library in Hobart. Prints taken from two of William's works were sold at art shops during Expo in Brisbane. One of his whaling pictures travelled Australia during the Bi-Centennial celebrations with the Great Australian Masters exhibition.
He & Lil planned a World Tour in 1974 & four days before they were to sai he had a massive heart attack which resulted in by-pass surgery so he never left Australia. After a few months they shifted to a caravan Park at Alexandra Headland in Queensland & when his daughter Lil & her family arrived back from overseas to live in Buderim he was overjoyed. He enjoyed his various activities & loved his family around him, the more the merrier - "We're a family of champions" was how he thought of them. He visited his sons & siblings in Melbourne in 1980 & went walking with his son Len round St.Kilda Pier where he used to go fishing as a kid. He stood at the end of the Pier gazing at the sea, Len said "as if he was having his last look" & that's just what it was. He came back to Queensland and went into hospital soon after where he died in March 1980 a few weeks after his 68th birthday & was cremated at Albany Creek Crematorium, Brisbane. Like the lines of one of his favourite poems "I'm goin' he said as he rode away, where the Pelican builds his nest."5
