He was the first school teacher in Halton County. While in Scotland, he was a shepherd. He walked 25 miles to court Ellen Reid. She was a lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Argyle. They both were born in 1796. John died 1884; Ellen died 1876. The Turnbulls were descendants of the Earl of Thirestane (or hirlstane). The old castle is now a tourist attraction(1955).
