The birth record also states that David Turnbull was a ploughman at West Stanhop(e) then. Although the mother is not named (as was often the case) on that birth record, both David Turnbull and Marion Laidlaw are named as having been his parents on James' registration of death in Hurlford, District of Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland on 19 Feb 1864. [ I note that David's birth year is given as circa 1785 on the T.C.G.C.; with this leaving something of a question mark, as he would have been only 15 years of age or so, when fathering James !
