AnecdoteANDREW TURNBULL M.D. was of Scotch descent and the founder of the American Branch of the TURNBULL family. A graduate of Edinburgh University, he then studied medicine in Paris, France. where he met the lady who became his wife (Gracia Maria Rubini), a Greek by birth, whose family came from Aleppo. Z Gracia Maria Rubini had been educated in Paris, and was famous for her great beauty, beside being the most accomplished and an excellent wife and mother. She was much noticed at court by Queen Charlotte, as she spoke German, which few ladies did in England at
that time. She was always a firm adherent of the Greek Orthodox Church, in whose ritual she had been born and bred, though her descendants have all belonged to the Church of England (later on, her descendants converted into other religions).
Dr. Turnbull, the ancestor, is mentioned by the Abbe Raynal in his "History of the East and West Indies" with encomium as "Le Sage Turnbull".
About 1767 he immigrated to America having received a grant from the British Government entitling him to large tracks in Florida (later known as new Smyma Beach), where he lived with his wife.
Before the American war of Independence, Florida was a constant bone of contention between France, Spain and England. Each struggled for supremacy in turn. Spain becoming finally Dominant, Dr. Andrew Tumbull, who held his claim under British rights, was dispossessed and forced to look for home and lands elsewhere, and settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where he died.
