RICHARD DOUGLAS.
An old and widely respected resident in "the person of Mr. Richard Douglas, of Gritjurk, passed away at his, home on Sunday evening at about eight o'clock. About ten months ago Mr. Douglas underwent a successful though serious operation, but in the latter months had not enjoyed the best of health. He was born in Jedburgh, Scotland, on the 13th. March, 1847, and came to, Australia with his parents in the , sailing ship, "The Admiral" (her maiden voyage), and landed at Port Philip on the 10th October, 1850. The captain of the vessel was Captain Grower The party then made their way overland in a bullock dray to Broadmeadows, now known as Hynam (South Australia), 300 miles. In 1855 his family took up land at, Swinside, Gritjurk. Mr. Richard Douglas went to various stations in the capacity as manager, having been at Kohgbool, Englefield, Strathdownie and Winninburn North. Whilst at Maryvale Station,- near Edenhope, he was married to Miss Helen Sutherland, daughter of Dr. Sutherland, then of Harrow, the wedding took place on June 2, 1875. After leaving Winninburn North, where he was manager for Mr. Albert Turnbull, he took up his residence, with his family at Hghfleld, Gritjurk, and lived there for14 years till 1923, when Mrs. Douglas passed away. Mr. Douglas then resided with other members of the family and relatives. Seven children are left to mourn their loss, they being, Miss Eva Douglas, Mrs Lament (Annie), of Tamora, N.S.W., and Miss Pauline Douglas, and William (Quamby), Richard (Fulham Estate), (Quamby), Richard Fulham Estate), George (Somerville), and Gordon (Victoria Valley). There -are; five sisters, Miss Jane Douglas (84 years), Mrs. I. Sutton, . Condah (80), Mrs T. Brown and Miss Lizzie Douglas (76, being twins) and Mrs. Peter Ferrier (68). His brother, Mr. Robert Douglas, of Swinside, died in August, 1921
The funeral took place ,on Tuesday, at Coleraine, the Rev. W. Huey Steele, officiating.¹
