Anecdote | One of our Connecticut State heroes is my ancestral uncle, Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. the only patriot Governor of the 13 colonies who remained in office prior to, during, and after the American Revolution. An ardent patriot of whom General George Washington, upon hearing of his death in 1785 stated, "A long and well spent life in the service of his country justly entitled him to the first place among patriots". The Governor Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. House still exists in Lebanon (built 1740). It is owned by the Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution. The Governor's War Office (built 1727) also still exists in Lebanon where Trumbull met with the Connecticut Council of Safety during the American Revolution; it's owned by the Connecticut Sons of the American Revolution. We annually conduct a remembrance/commemoration ceremony for him there in October around his birthday. His sons, Colonel John Trumbull, was the famous artist of the American Revolution; Joseph, who was a Commissary-General, and Jonathan, Jr., a secretary to General Washington, and later also a Connecticut Governor. The Trumbulls were deeply involved with the founding of the United States.TGSee also attached articles.6 |
