Note | Claude Tuffin. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census, Claude is listed as the adopted son of John Farthing of Salt Harbour Island, Newfoundland. The Farthings had taken Claude in when his mother died giving birth to his youngest sister, Media. Claude did not feel free to leave the family and emigrate to the United States until he turned 21. Claude is listed as being Methodist and a fisherman in the 1921 Census. Claude emigrated to the United States in November of 1922 (per Harold Farthing).
Harold Farthing says that his parents remembered Claude as being a "good boy".
Claude's occupation is listed as a carpenter on his marriage certificate. At the time of his marriage, Claude lived at 115 Marlboro Street in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Claude became a United States citizen on August 25, 1930 (naturalization certificate).
From Robert Batt, October 14, 1998:
Hi Amalie. I was talking to my dad tonight. He had asked me your grandfather's name. When I told him it was Claude Tuffin he said he could recall that Garnet [Batt] (my grandfather) and Claude had travelled to Brooklyn, New York together in the early 1920's to look for work. Around that time, work was scarce in Nfld so it was common for men and women to leave the island and travel to the eastern states in search of employment. Both Garnet and Lauretta (his future wife - my grandmother) travelled to Brooklyn with Claude (and possibly others). Garnet and Lauretta worked in a clock factory. Not sure where Claude worked. In about 1923 Garnet and Lauretta returned to Herring Neck. (They had gotten married in Brooklyn.) I would guess that Claude stayed and later moved to Mass. where he married your grandmother. |
