| Anecdote | JOHN TURNBULL, second child and eldest son of ROBERT and MARY SMITH TURNBULL, was born at La Prairie Center on November 07, 1860, and died on July 11, 1929. He was reared on the home farm, attended district schools, and studied at Brown's Business College in Peoria, Illinois. He entered business on his own in 1884, engaging in general agricultural pursuits and stock-raising. He made a specialty of feeding cattle and hogs, as well as tilling the land, and was also a President of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of La Prairie Township for 24 years, a member of the Marshall County Board of Supervisors for 18 years and President of the State Bank of Speer for 14 years. On September 09, 1886, he married Clara Jane Noel, in Lacon, IL. She was born July 21, 1863, in Ogle County, Illinois, to M. F. and Margaret Householder Noel, and was educated at Mount Morris College. They had four children. Following the death of John Turnbull, Clara married J. Webster Greene, also a farmer and cattle raiser of La Prairie Center, who had been widowed by the death of his wife, Alma Webber Greene, daughter of Addison Porter and Rachel Naomi Calder Webber. He died March 23, 1936, and Clara Noel Turnbull Greene died March 23, 1940. Both John and Clara were members of the La Prairie United Presbyterian Church and are buried in the La Prairie United Presbyterian Cemetery.1 |

In spite of physicians, specialists, and recuperative treatments at Warm Springs, Georgia, his paralysis remained his entire life. On January 11, 1942, he married Dorothy Miltenberger of Rushville, IL, daughter of William and Clara Huff Miltenberger. Dorothy was born June 04, 1913, in Schulyler County, IL, and graduated from Rushville High School and Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Peoria, Illinois. They established their home on the farm in La Prairie, and in spite of his crippling illness, Howard took an active part in the management of the farm, community civic affairs, salesman for a feed company and a seed corn company, and a lifetime member of the La Prairie United Presbyterian Church. Dorothy continues to live at 5250 Knoxville, Apt. 416B, Peoria, IL.1 |
