Obituary | His Obituary was published on 30 April 2024. Mark A. TurnbullMay 2, 1951 — April 28, 2024Sandsfield, MA Mark Alexander Turnbull, age 72, left this world for his final adventure on Sunday, April 28 2024 following complications from COPD. He is predeceased by his mother, Joyce Irene (Stott) Chloros, his father Robert Gordon Turnbull, and his sister Lisa Marie Bean. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters Deborah (Chloros) Dubois of Des Moines, IA and Angela "Angie" Chloros of Manchester, NH as well as his many nieces and nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends. Mark led a varied and colorful life. He once described himself someone who had “been a lumberjack in Maine, panned for gold in Alaska, rode horses across North Texas, climbed all over the Bavarian Alps, swum in the Mediterranean, toured Crete, checked out Springtime in Paris, and was a long-haired hippie anarchist in the East Village (New York City) in the late 1960s.” Mark was a U.S. Army veteran, serving on active duty from 1980 and 1984, and in the NH Army National Guard. He was stationed primarily in Germany with the 32nd Army Air Defense Command during the latter part of the cold war. He was also a member of American Legion Post 79 in Manchester, NH. Following several years of positions in federal service and in the security sector, his love of animals led him to open a retail pet store. This was later sold, but he continued to manage it for several more years. In retirement, Mark devoted much of his time to his passion for exploring and celebrating his Scottish heritage. He was a proud member of the Scottish American Military Association Post 1812, the St. Andrew’s Society of N.H., and the Turnbull Clan Association -- where he was an active volunteer in a variety of roles, including lead archivist and regional trustee. He loved representing his clan at the New Hampshire Highland Games and at other Gatherings of the Clans during Scottish heritage events across New England, especially as the longtime co-host of the Clan Turnbull tent. In recent years, chronic health issues caused him to step back from this work. He continued to follow the clan’s activities from afar while a resident at Berkshire Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Facility in Standisfield, MA, where he was affectionately known as ‘Sarge’. Mark will be remembered as a kind, generous, and loving brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to all who knew him. A graveside committal service will be held on Wednesday, May 8th at 10 am in the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen. |
