A Black slave named Laurence. Gordon subsequently manumitted Laurence for her faithful services. Gordon Turnbull by his last will and testament (of which I have a copy) devised a house and land to Laurence during her lifetime and after to his children Horatio Nelson Turnbull, Elizabeth Turnbull, Catherine Turnbull, Helen Turnbull and Alexander Turnbull. The children also inherited slaves and money for their maintenance and education.¹

Had a mixed race son named Alexander Turnbull. So there were two cousins in Grenada who shared the name Alexander Turnbull. However, since Alexander’s son Alexander was sent to Scotland before 1807 to be trained in the wheel wright business and since there is no evidence that he ever returned to Grenada; it seems reasonable to assume that since Gordon’s son Alexander was the only one of the name in the island in 1832, he was the father of Alexander Turnbull (d 1899) who went out to Australia.
