Biography | Biography appears on. William Trumbull (1575?–1635) was an English diplomat, administrator and politician. From 1605 to 1625 Trumbull was secretary and later envoy from James I and then Charles I at the Brussels Court of Archduke Albert of Austria, ruler of the Habsburg Netherlands.[1]Trumbull also had an interest in music. Around 1595 he compiled a personally prepared collection of lute manuscripts that has become known as the Trumbull lute book, which shows he would have had access to the lute music of English court composers spanning much of the reign of Elizabeth I.[1]LifeHe was son of John Trumbull of Craven, Yorkshire, and his wife, Elizabeth Brogden or Briggden. He seems to have been introduced at court by Sir Thomas Edmondes. Early in James I's reign he was a court messenger, and probably he was attached to Edmondes's embassy to the Archduke Albert of Austria, regent of the Netherlands. When Edmondes was recalled from Brussels in 1609, Trumbull was promoted to succeed him as resident at the archduke's court, and retained the post for sixteen years, On 6 June 1611 he was instructed to demand the extradition of William Seymour and Arabella Stuart should they land in the archduke's dominions. On 17 February 1614, he was granted an ordinary clerkship to the privy council; a sinecure, given that Trumbull remained at his post at Brussels. In 1620 he protested against the Spanish invasion of the Palatinate. In 1624 he requested the reversion of one of the six clerks' places for himself and a clerkship of the privy seal for his eldest son. He was recalled in 1625 on the open rupture with Spain and on 16 February 1626 he was returned to parliament for Downton in Wiltshire. He assumed active duties as clerk of the privy council, devoting himself especially to naval matters. On 28 March 1629, he was granted Easthampstead Park, Berkshire, on condition of maintaining a deer-park for the king's recreation. Soon afterwards he was appointed muster-master-general. He died in London in September 1635, being succeeded as clerk to the council by his godson Edward Nicholas, and was buried in Easthampstead church, where a monument was erected to his memory.WorksTrumbull's correspondence is a source for the diplomatic history of the period; it was preserved in various archives.[2] Many of the letters were printed in Ralph Winwood's Memorials, and in Dudley Digges's Compleat Ambassador. While at Brussels Trumbull secured the private correspondence between Francisco de Vargas y Mexia and Cardinal Granvelle on the Council of Trent; an English translation was published in 1697 by Michael Geddes, and one in French by Michel Le Vassor in 1700.FamilyBy his wife Deborah, daughter of Walter Downes of Beltring, Kent, he left two sons and two daughters. The elder son, William (1594?–1668), was father of Sir William Trumbull.11 |

- [S3649] Trumbull, William, Trumbull Lute Book, Trumbull lute book (MS Add.8844), The Trumbull lute book (MS Additional 8844) is a rare example of a personal lute book made and used by an English government official and diplomat. Apart from one item at the end, it was almost certainly copied c.1595 by William Trumbull (1575?-1635), secretary and later envoy to James I and then Charles I at the Brussels Court of Archduke Albert of Austria from at least 1605 to 1625.
The manuscript was never bound and so the edges of the pages are badly eroded and 8 folios have been cut out from the original 33 (66 pages). What survives contains 38 items of music, all but two for 6-course renaissance lute, mainly solos plus 10 duet parts, often only one of the two, and 2 ensemble parts, which permit a glimpse into how William may have used the lute book.
The repertory almost exclusively comprises English dance forms, mainly pavans, and galliards, and only a few arrangements of vocal music and popular tunes. He must have been quite an accomplished lutenist as the majority require an intermediate standard of technical ability. He seems to have copied it during his formative years when he probably took lute lessons as part of his education and hopefully was diligent enough to practise lute solos for personal recreation. His lute book may also have served the important function of providing him with parts to use for social music making, playing duets or in a consort, a practice that he might have continued during the time he was working in Brussels.
When he was compiling his anthology he seems to have had access to lute music of English court composers spanning much of the reign of Elizabeth I, as the manuscript includes examples by Philip van Wilder (1), Augustine Bassano (1), Alfonso Ferrabosco (fragments only of 1), Nicholas Strogers (2), John Johnson (8), Richard Allison (1), Francis Cutting (1), Anthony Holborne (5), Thomas Morley (1) and John Dowland (1).

James Bears Trumbull’s father, also a James Trumbull, was born on 4 February 1769 in Connecticut. He married Phebe Clinton, born 9 August 1777 in Fairfield County Connecticut. In addition to James Bears Trumbull, there were at least 8 other children. Most of these children have been well documented. Large numbers of the descendants of James Bears Trumbull and his siblings share mitochondrial DNA and traditional research also supports these familial ties.
For husband, James, his birth date came from a cemetery tombstone inscription with a census record confirmation.

Husband, James, was living in Tompkins County, New York by at least the mid to late 1820’s. He married Sophia Campbell in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York on 17 March 1828. The record for the marriage was published in a local newspaper. Ithaca is about 170 miles northwest of Goshen in Orange County. Others of the children including James B., Isaac and Sarah, were living in Tompkins County in the late 1820’s and early to mid 1830’s.
The marriage relationship in the early 1820’s between James and Phebe, is uncertain. Divorces were relatively rare and a divorce record has not been located. Desertion can’t be ruled out.

Anecdote | An immigrant Trumbull ancestor for our family has not been located. He would have had to have arrived prior to 1769 since James, husband of Phebe Clinton Trumbull, was born that year in Connecticut. The place of birth of his father is unknown and he could have been an immigrant ancestor (or not). Based on the 1800 census entry, he would have been born prior to 1760 and with at least one child born in 1769, his birth year would most likely have been in the 1730’s or 1740’s. Disparate family sources had indicated New England parentage and Scottish linage in referencing James and Phebe.1 |
