Death | He died on 19 January 1943 at age ~80 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, United States. |
Burial | He was buried at Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, United States. First Name: Axel George Last Name: Hanson Date Of Death: 19 Jan 1943 Age: 78 Father Name: Carl Magnus Hanson Mother Name: Anna Sophia Magnuson Batch Id: 523674 Batch Locality: Washington, United States Death Place: Enumclaw, King County, Washington Mother Name Gn: Anna Sophia Axel George Hanson was born to Carl Magnus Hanson and Anna Sophia (Gustaveson) Hanson in Brastad, Vastra Gotalands Lans, Sweden in October, 1864. His father immigrated to America in 1883 and his mother came with him and his six siblings in 1885. The family settled in Washington State. Axel initially worked as a railroad agent in Black Diamond, King County, WA. He married Jennie Trumbull of Pennsylvania [b.1870] in about 1894 and the couple settled into a house which he purchased in Enumclaw, King County. He had jointly purchased a sawmill in Lake Wilderness with his father and brother-in-law, John A. McKinnon, which they operated until 1897. They then purchased the old White River Mill at Enumclaw, renaming it the White River Lumber Company, and he invested in timbered lands in the Enumclaw area. Axel and Jennie divorced before 1910 and he apparently gave her the house, moving in with his sister, Olga Ophelia, her husband, John McKinnon, and their sons, Carl Alexander, John Archibald Jr., and Paul Hanson McKinnon. Axel and Olga's mother, Anna Sophia Hanson, also lived with the family following the death of her husband in 1906. Even though the mill burned down in 1903, Axel rebuilt it to become a model mill for the Pacific Northwest and the lumber company thrived, as Washington's population grew along with it's need for housing and commercial buildings. By 1920, Axel was business manager for the mill and John was general manager of the mill itself. The family home had no mortgage, and John and Olga had servants from 1910 throughout their lives. Their home would be valued at $20,000 in 1930, and they would have their own radio. Sophia passed away on June 30th, 1923, however, and was buried with her dear husband, Carl Magnus Hanson, at Tacoma Cemetery in Pierce County. Also, Axel's nephew, and Carl Hanson's namesake, Carl Alexander, the 1st born child, had died October 4th, 1920, and was buried by his grandfather. Axel remarried the same year as his mother's death to Edna (Stewart) Flemming,[b.1881, Iowa] a divorcee, 1923. The couple moved into a house at 1610 Griffin, Enumclaw. Their home was valued at $20,000 in 1930, there was no mortgage, they had 2 servants and they owned a radio. Axel stated, on the 1930 Census, that he was a lumber manufacturer. The couple remained in their home on Griffin in S. Enumclaw when the 1940 census was taken in April of that year. Axel was apparently now retired and they no longer had servants, but they had a chauffeur. When he died on January 19, 1943, he passed away at home and was said to be one of the wealthiest lumber operators in Washington State [per Jan 20, 1943 Obit, Seattle Times]. He left behind his wife, Edna, nephews and 3 remaining sisters to mourn his loss. His dear sister, and John's wife, Olga, had herself passed from this life in 1937. Axel was also buried at Tacoma Cemetery in Pierce County, WA. His loving wife, Edna, never remarried, but passed away while visiting family in Santa Barbara, CA. on May 17, 1950. Her remains were returned to Washington so she could be buried next to her beloved husband at the Tacoma Cemetery in Pierce County, together again, for Eternity.1 |
