Obit: Mrs. Thomas Patton and Mrs. Polly Bunker died the morning of 2 December 1907, both well-known long time residents of Monmouth. The stern hand of the Death Angel, which had touched so many of the older residents of the Maple City in the past few weeks, rested that morning on the Patton home on North Third street and a loved wife and mother went to her eternal reward. For some time Mrs. Patton had been ailing, having suffered an apoplectic stroke on Saturday 9 November. She had just returned from a trip to her old home in Ohio and on her way back had visited with her daughter, Mrs. Will Reynolds of Chicago, returning to Monmouth in her usual health. The next day, however, she experienced the dread stroke. For over a week it seemed that she would rally, but for the past few days constantly grown weaker, and this morning at 4 o'clock she quietly passed away. Eliza Jane Black was born near Tranquility, Adams County Ohio 22 June 1832, being the second child of a family of nine children. In the spring of 1847 she moved with her parents to Peoria county where for several years they made their home. In 1850, she came with herparents to this vicinity settling just west of Monmouth. She married Robert Davison 5 August 1852 and they moved to Oquawka after their marriage and then to Monmouth where he died 17 May 1859. She later was united in marriage with Thomas Patton in Monmouth 15 October 1878. Her husband and three children were left to mourn her loss, Charles Patton of Monmouth, Mrs. George F. Niblock of Derby, Iowa and Mrs. Will Reynolds of Chicago. She united with the Seceder church at Sugar Tree Grove, then was present at the first communion service at the First United Presbyterian church in Monmouth just after its organization. She united with that church and was quite active in its Women's Missionary Society. Her funeral was conducted by Dr. J.A. Burnett with burial in the Monmouth cemetery.
