My mother remembers Dad's Uncle William as a very generous man. One day he visited her while Dad was away at sea. He called in one day whilst she was feeding my brother Ian, and Mum had swept the coal cellar to gather enough for a fire. On leaving he gave her £5, which was a lot of money then, and the first thing she did was call the coalman to fill the cellar back up. She has never forgotten that act of kindness.
She also says that he and his brother David (my Grandfather) were inveterate gamblers (William was a bookmaker). Mum remembers him being very good with numbers, but he and David managed to gamble away the families Dairy business. They were never forgiven!
