According to Confederate Muster rolls J.B. Turnbough (Turnbow) appeared on the consolidated Report of the number of men in the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 1st Corps., Army of the Mississippi, who will be over 35 and under 18 years of age on the the 16 of July next (list not dated) he was listed as present and under 18 years. A second Muster record states that J.B. Turnbo (Turnbow) was a Pvt. in Company F, 13th Regiment, Arkansas and appeared on a List of soldiers of the 1st Corps, Army of the Mississippi, commanded by Maj. Gen. L. Polk, to be discharged, they having been declared unfit for service by the Medical Board of Inspectors. List dated Tupelo June 30, 1862. And a third record, states: Co. F, 13th Arkansas, Pvt. J.B. Turnbo (Turnbow) appears on a Register of Payments to Discharged Soldiers, Discharged: 5 July, 1862, Date of Payment: 18 July 1862: Paid by J. W. Bradford.
In Martha Turnbow's widow application for pension it stated that John Turnbow was discharged or paroled on 15 October, 1863, she was approved for a full pension in June 1922. His proof of Service was confirmed by G. B. Borah and E.N.F. Sullivan who both stated that J. B. Turnbow had served from about 1862 to 1863 both stated that this was based on actual knowledge of service.
During the period of John B.'s enlistment his unit (Company F. Thirteenth Arkansas Infantry Regiment,Arkansas Volunteers.) was engaged in the following battles:
22 Jan 1862-- Kinnesaw Mountain
6-7 April 1862-- Shiloh*
13 April 1862-- Macon, Mississippi
June 1862-- Macon, Mississipi
* At the Battle of Shiloh, Lt. Col. A.D. Grayson, who formed the Regiment in Arkansas, was killed in action. Company F was led by Captain Thomas Wilds--the Company had one killed and six wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, Capt. Wilds was one of the wounded.
