" on 26th February 1896 received a Commission
in the West Yorkshire Regiment. On promotion he was transferred
to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, in 1898. During the Boer War he saw
active service in 1900 with the 4th Mounted Infantry, and was severely
wounded, as the result of which he lost his right arm, near Britstown,
Cape Colony. He received the Queen's Medal with one clasp. From 1901
to 1904 he served on the Staff of the Army Signalling School, and invented
a new type of signalling lamp ; and from 1907 to 1911, having passed the
final examination of the Advanced Class, Artillery College, he served on
the Inspection and Experimental Staff. On 22nd April 1911, after fifteen
years of service, he retired as a Captain, but, having rejoined for service
during the Great War, he was promoted to the rank of Major on ist January
1915, and was employed in Canada and in England as Inspector of Small
Arms, and subsequently as Inspector of Steel. He received the British
War Medal, and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
At present (1925) he has an appointment under the Ministry of Labour."
