" he obtained a Commission in the Border Regiment on
3rd August 1898. He saw active service in South Africa from 1899 to 1901,
gaining the Queen's Medal with four clasps. After being promoted to the
rank of Lieutenant on 20th October 1901, he exchanged into the Indian
Army, where he obtained his Captaincy on 3rd August 1907. He exchanged
back into the British Army on 4th April 1908, and joined the East Yorkshire
Regiment, getting his Majority on 15th May 1915. In the meanwhile he
had passed through the Staff College, and from 5th August 1914 to nth
May 1915 he was G.S.O.3 Home Forces ; from 12th May 1915 to 30th
January 1916 he was a G.S.O.3 in France ; from 31st January 1916 to
30th January 1917 he was a G.S.0.2 in France ; and from 31st January
1917 until 29th January 1920 he was a G.S.O.i in France and Vladivostock.
His services were rewarded by four Mentions in Despatches, the brevet
rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, the D.S.O., the C.M.G., the Legion of Honour,
5th Class, and the Order of the Crown of Italy, 4th Class. He earned the
1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. In 1920
he saw service in Iraq, and gained the General Service Medal with the
clasp " Iraq." He was promoted substantive Lieutenant-Colonel on nth
November 1920, and was placed on half pay four years later, on completion
of his term of service."
