Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull was a merchant in Wellington, New Zealand with a deep interest in books. In 1918, he left to the Government of New Zealand his private library consisting of 55,000 volumes as well as manuscripts, photographs, paintings and sketches. The bequest was hailed at the time as "the most generous bequest to the people of New Zealand ever made by a New Zealander".
Today, the Alexander Turnbull Library is housed in the National Library of New Zealand, and holds the nations collection of books, photos, letters, drawings, maps, music and sound recordings that document the history of that part of the world.
