AnecdoteOur earliest ancestor to arrive in Australia appears to be George Jones, born around 1799 in Wiltshire, England. At 19 he was a farm labourer with blue eyes & light brown hair when he was tried at Wiltshire for a Felony in 4 March 1820. Leaving his mother & father in his native place being Calne, he was transported for life to Australia as a convict per "JULIANA" arriving in December 1820. His Prison Report was "Pretty Good", Hulk Report "Good". His prison record shows more convictions for various misdemeanours between June 1834 & August 1835:

Tried July 22 1834:Strong suspicion of having stolen or embezled (on June 30 1834) a Steer, the property of Francis Bryant & of being concerned in various other offences of Cattle Steeling in the District of Oatlands - Deprived of his T.L. (Ticket of Leave) and forwarded to the P.B. at Hobart Town with a recommendation that he shall not be sent into the Int... again.
Oct. 17 1834 Misconduct in taking his Horses into a Quarry hole to wash their feet by which one of the Animals received an Injury, Admonition.
Nov 22 1834: Cruelty to the Government Horses, 25 Lashes.
31 August 1835 With using obscene language to a female Servant in his Masters house - 9 months to a road fifty on probation. 9 Months Glenorchy Rd. fifty on probation .... Decision 10 Sept 1835.”

George was granted a Conditional Pardon on 19 October 1838. He was a 42 year old farmer when he married Susan Featherstone in St.David's Church, Hobart, on 22nd November, 1841, when she gave her age as 25. Susan was sentenced to 7 years transportation in 1937 to Australia for stealing a shawl, arriving in Hobart Town 22nd Oct. 1837 aboard the Platina. Geo. & Susan had 13 children the 8th born on 9 June 1853 was Georgina who married Frederick Henry Turnbull in 1872. According to Pioneer Records Geo. Jones (farmer) died of "old age" on 20 Sept 1872 aged 78.3
