Anecdote | Their sons Ern, Joe & Stan inherited the property at Gordon. Ern was a bit of a bush lawyer and must have known a thing or two about life. He built a house on the old property & eventually planted an apple orchard. He later bought out Joe & Stan's share as they had no interest in the orchard. Stan went into the hotel business at Cygnet & Joe went to work at the hydro station at Queenstown. Frederick married Mary Agnes Brennan & had son Frederick Douglas born 19 Aug 1899 at Lyell. The old homestead belonging to Frederick Snr. was just a few hundred yards from Ern's house. After it burnt down, Ern's children used to follow the plough as the soil was being turned, & find all sorts of things like broken crockery, coins & even a gold ring. The orchard was still producing in 1985, however it may now be subdivided for residential blocks (1998). They were champion axemen - as attested to by the following obituary when Ern died in May 1965: "The funeral in Hobart yesterday of Mr.Ernest Henry Turnbull of New Town, one of Tasmania's former champion sawyers & axement, was attended by many sporting personalities.Mr. Turnbull, formerly of Gordon, died in Hobart on Saturday aged 71. A member of a well known D'Entrecasteaux Channel milling family, Mr.Turnbull with his brothers William & the late Joseph & Stan, excelled at sawing & chopping. A great sawyer, he set a record by winning the single-handed championship at Ulverstone four years in succession from 1926-1929. With his brother Stan and later his son Geoff, he also won many double-handed sawing events in various parts of the State. In 1921 at the Geeveston Sports Club carnival, William won the 12", 15" & 18" chopping events, Joseph & Ernest the double-handed sawing, & Ernest the single-handed sawing.Mr.Turnbull also won many chipping events at sporting meetings in the South & North-West Coast. Born at Gordon, Mr.Turnbull conducted a sawmill in the Channel district until retiring about 3 years ago. He leaves a wife, two sons Geoff & Terence, & 3 daughters - Mesdames D.Moate (Moonah) C. Morrisby (Goodwood) & J. Hartley (NSW)"
In the Hobart MERCURY of Thursday 7.7.1966: "CARNIVAL MAY BE HELD IN HONOUR OF TURNBULL BROTHERS: The name of the famous Tasmanian family of axemen, the Turnbull brothers, may be perpetuated by a special carnival named in their honour during the 1966-67 season. The brothers Joe, Bill, Ernie & Stan were known throughout Australia for their brilliant chopping.Delegates at the annual meeting of the Association were told by the Secretary (Mr.A.P.O'Byrne) that if such a carnival were conducted more than 100 of Australia's best axemen would d compete. Mr.O'Byrne suggested that events should include 10" and 12" standing, 12" underhand, and a single-handed sawing contest in which the Turnbull brothers were adept. Great Season: The carnival, if arranged, would be the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. The winner of each of the four events might go to N.Z. for a fortnight. ..... The President, Mr.H.K.Fenton described the season as the best on record. The 2,000 chop at Bushy Park in January was the biggest in Tasmania & was sponsored by the State Government ....." The Turnbull girls, Elizabeth & Louise, went to the mainland & lived in Melbourne. Ern's daughter Rita as a girl wrote to another girl in Melbourne for years before she found out she was her cousin - her aunt Louise's daughter, who later came to visit them in Tasmania. Elizabeth was registered Turnbull at birth and was later burnt to death. Her death certificate states "Elizabeth Turnbull also known as Benbow." Frederick Henry Turnbull, was born 29th July 1845 in Hobart. His birth certificate (in which he is unnamed has a later notation "Baptised St.David's - Frederick Henry") lists his father as John Turnbull (farmer) and his mother as Rebecca Jarvis. At his baptism when he was 2 months old the parents are listed as John (a boatman) & Rebecca Turnbull of North West Bay (Snug). He was only 14 when both Rebecca Jarvis & John Turnbull died in 1859 three months apart. Turnbulls lived around the Middleton/Gordon orchard area and were still in residence in 1984 when we visited. As many as six related families live within a quarter of a mile radius. Frederick died 6 years later on 25th November 1917, aged 77, at the home of his daughter Isabella (married Holt) 216 Campbell St. Hobart, leaving 7 male children & 3 females still living. He is buried in Snug cemetery.2,5 |

Occupation | About 1840 John Turnbull was a Farmer in Snug, Tasmania, Australia.5 |
Anecdote | John Turnbull (Farmer) & Rebecca Jarvis the deserted wife of Wm. Jarvis, were listed as parents of Frederick Henry Turnbull in 1845 in Tasmania. As the birth was registered by Thos. Pierce "Inmate, Snug River" it was assumed this was a prison hospital. John was still with the Jervis family in 1853 when he was witness to the baptism of Rebecca's grandchild, William & Mary's daughter Louisa. If John Turnbull was a convict he may have been the 19 year old sailor from Newcastle born in 1819, who arrived aboard MOFFAT (2) 1 Apr. 1838 He had been tried for stealing from a shop & sentenced to 7 years at Durham on 3 Apr.1837 along with James Richardson who was also on board. His conduct record (CON33/36) recorded that on 7 Oct. 1839 he was with the Marine Department when he was charged with improper conduct. On 6 Aug 1840 he went absent without leave & received 25 lashes. In 1841 he stole a Govt. boat without leave at sunset & returned the following day. For this he received 6 months hard labour on the roads and was not to be employed in the Marine Dept. again. This could be where he became involved with the Jarvis family, as Wm.Jarvis to whom Rebecca was married was a member of the Royal Veterans Corps who were shipped to Australia to oversee convicts in such tasks as well as protect the population from bushrangers & escaped convicts. John was still with Rebecca in 1853 when he was witness to the baptism of Rebecca's grandchild, William & Mary's daughter Louisa. This John Turnbull was about the right age for the chap who choked in 1859 He was also a farme/boatman who died accidentally 24 July 1859 age 42.(46?) It was reported in the Mercury that he lived at Snug and was the owner of a small craft named "Cygnet" and was known by the nick name "Jackie Pudding". His death was caused by choking on a piece of meat during lunch at a Hobart hotel with a friend. Nothing has yet been found to connect him to Rebecca Jarvis or indeed Frederick Henry, except that he came from Snug which was a small country area south of Hobart and unlikely to have two people with the same name residing there. There are also stories of him having been sailor who went for the easy money of sealing in Bass Strait. Mollison refered to "Friendly Missions" edited by B. Plomley in which a sealer Turnbull or Thos. Turnbull was named. "19 Dec 1830 Mr. Parish found Turnbull marooned on Penguin Island with 5 women, had been living with these wretched men (sealers) 12 months and had 24 skins - had been in a Merchants Counting House. Walyer had plotted to kill Turnbull, as the other sealers were away on Clarks Island Reef. Turnbull is cousin to Mr. Anstey's wife (TheMagistrate)." Whether this is our Turnbull, or a relative is yet to be discovered.2,4 |

Other Life Events
Anecdote | Wm.Jarvis & Rebecca Adcock were married in St. Mary's Church, Nottinghamshire on 4 Nov. 1822. They sailed on the John Barry to Australia, when William enlisted in the Royal Veterans Corps. They had 2 children Louisa & Henry (maybe William.) William Snr. left Tasmania around 1835 and went to NSW. Around 1832 Rebecca entered into a de facto relationship with William Benbow, and ex convict, and had 5 more children. They purchased and sold parcels of land around Hobart during the period 1831 to 1836. Wm. Benbow drowned on 27 March 1843, the inquest being held the next day at Rebecca's house. After his death, Rebecca took up with John Turnbull, a sealer. Their son Fdk. Henry Turnbull was born 29th July 1845 His birth certificate (in which he is unnamed, has a later notation later stating "Baptised St.David's - Frederick Henry") lists his father as John Turnbull (farmer) and his mother as Rebecca Jarvis - Wm's wife would have been 48 years old. At his baptism when he was 2 months old the parents are listed as John (a boatman) & Rebecca Turnbull of North West Bay (Snug) Thos Pierce (Inmate, Snug River) was informant of Fdrk Turnbull's birth. A convict named Thos. Pierce was 46 when tried in 1830. As clerk to Edward Messiter Dyne solicitor, he was witness for Rebecca Jarvis to a land transaction of 30 acres in Kingborough on Snug Rivulet on 7 Dec 1837. The land was purchased from J. Waugh, formerly a private in the NSW Battaslion. Two earlier conveyances by Rebecca were both in 1834, the first in Warwick Street Hobart Town where she paid 60 to John Brentnall for an allotment, and the second Rebecca sold an allotment in Salisbury St in Hobart Town to S. Martin. There was no mention of William Jarvis in any of these transactions. Rebecca Jarvis was "a farmer's wife" when she died on 24 April 1859, age 62. Cause of death was "brain damage sustained through falling downstairs whilst under the influence of liquor causing compression of the Brain by rupture of Blood vessel". She was buried at Snug Cemetery with her son William (Henry?) & his wife Mary, and next to Thomas Benbow's daughter Caroline. Her grave has now completely fallen over.2,4 |
