Anecdote | Archibald Turnbull initially followed the trade of a boot maker but became a deacon in the Anglican Church in 1877, and was ordained an anglican priest at Goulbourn in 1889. The following year he was appointed to St Johns Church, New Town, Hobart. He had divorced his wife Harriet in 1878 on the grounds of adultery and married Ada Louise Taylor in June the following year.
In September of 1894, during the great depression experienced in the 1890’s, Reverend Archibald Turner followed by two bands from the Friendly Societies and a crowd of unemployed workers estimated at between 750 and 4000, marched on Parliament House at Hobart demanding that the government do something about providing work and wages for the unemployed which at that time was estimated to be about a third of the adult male population of Hobart. The mob was carrying banners and flaring torches and were confronted by members of the Hobart Municipal Police and the Territorial Police when they arrived at Government House. The Militia could not be called out as many of the members were with the mob.
Turnbull presented a petition to the premier, Sir Edward Braddon, and bragged that he alone was responsible for the orderly conduct of the mob and hinted at the threat of violence. The premier accepted the petition but refused to allow Turnbull permission to address Parliament.
The following day an article in the Hobart newspaper,” The Mercury”, condemned the members taking part in the march and described them as ridiculous and impractical although some historians claim that this confrontation lead to the formation of the Labor Party in Tasmania.
In May 1895 Turnbull was defrocked and he and his wife returned to Melbourne where they founded the” Labour Church” the following year.9 |
