Birth | Robert Charles Oliver was born on 17 January 1896 in Wirrate, Victoria, Australia. Robert was born at 'Sandy Glen'. The day was very hot with a maximum temperature reading 113F. Mrs Connelly, a neighbour acted as mid wife. Bob went to scholl at Bailieston by pony and cart, a distance of about 4 miles. Mr Baud was his school teacher. He left school on obtaining his Merit Certificate at the age of 14. His first job was helping his father fence the back paddock of the selection. He soon learned the art of cutting sleepers with the broad axe cutting many hundreds from what is known as the house paddock. He also became very proficient and clean shearer and shore with some big teams in N.S.W. as well as working in the local area. He learned the many and varied trick of the carpentry trade from his father who was almost a 'perfectionist'. He owned several horse teams and drays. He also did a lot of wood cutting and carting. He enjoyed sport and played football with Bailieston, Mitchelltown and Moormbool. After his marriage he and Mag went to live at Nowa Nowa in Gippsland, where he built their marital home 'Chez Nous'. They returned to Wirrate when his father became seriously ill and carried on the property after he died in August 1924. For some time Bob and Mag lived in a tent 'down home' before they built their permanent home. The front four rooms were shifted from Costerfield. As the family grew so did the house with the addition of the long room, back room and wash house. (The wash house used to be part of the old Post Office at Graytown) The bought their first car in 1927 from Elsbury's Garrage in Heathcote - a brand new Capitol Chevrolet costing 170 pounds. Bob was an active member of the Wirrate S.S.Committee serving as correspondent for many years. Bob died of a heart attach in 1964. Meg continued to live at the farm until 1971 when she died of cancer.
