Anecdote | When Mike Lucas was a baby he had trouble pronouncing Grandma or Grandpa so he called his granparents Ma and Pappy and it stuck. All family and children called them that. Pappy and Clara both had wavy strawberry blond hair. Kate Bartelmes has strawberry blond hair and her two children, Ariel and Blair, have flaming red hair and auburn eyes. Everyone else is tall. Clara died in the 1918 flu epidemic. According to family tales, Pappy ran away from home at thirteen years old. The family had a plantation in Kentucky bluegrass country . He stayed with a black gentleman who trained horses for the Kentucky Derby for a while and was trained to be a jockey . Joy Piles says he once rode in the Kentucky Derby. There are family pictures showing Pappy as a young child with his black "mammy".2 |

She told me they all had to work as soon as they could. She told me about taking a job as a housecleaner in said that she knotted sheets and climbed out a window and ran away. She was an exceptionally beautiful young woman, tall, willowy with a waist so tiny you could put your two hands all the way around. She had dark brown eyes and dark brown hair. She told me sister Maggie was once a Miss Montana - K. Bartelmes When Ma was married to Pappy, he weighed 115 lbs. and was 23. Ma was 20 and weighed 90 lbs. Note - Ma was 5'9' tall! Pappy was 5'6' tall. They travelled a lot to Idaho, Oregon, Vancouver, Canada, Caifornia, Utah, Montana back to Spokane where Joy was born. They returned to Seattle when Joy was 4 months old. |
