AnecdoteWhat Papa told me of his Parents
By Augusta Webb Ford Andrews
Father told me. “My father married a pretty face, named K.T., his father, an irascible, violent man quarreled with him on account of it and from that time on had nothing to do with him. I remember my father was good and very handsome—especially on horseback he used to take me on his horse in front of him for long rides, sometimes I went to sleep –he was very proud of me. He died when I was between four and five years old. I do not remember my mother much except that she had a pretty face. After my fathers death my grandfather James Ford came and took me home with him. I refused to go and leave ‘Pely’( think I have the name right) of all else I write I remember almost word for word told me while you were at Clifton Springs) “The greatest grief of my life was Pelys leaving me-they took him home with me he was a poor white aged About fifteen -- I went to bed happy, Pely was there. They sent him away the next morning before I was up and when I asked for him they told me he had left me. I have suffered many things in life, my daughter but nothing like this I felt alone, deserted by my one friend.
The widow Frazier did not want another child around she was very unkind to me and made your grand-father (He always said your grandfather instead of your great grandfather)
Jim Bobby was not kind to me. Your grandfather used to set the older boys of the neighborhood on me to fight me to see if I had pluck. I did not want to fight so he called me coward and then I would get mad and fight hard but was always whipped as my opponent was always so much larger than I. At the age of seven I was sent to the Jesuits at Bardstown. Your grandfather Webb was my guardian he was very good to me. James Ford was a little man he would argue for hours on whether an egg was a guineas or a hen’s egg. Your grandfather James Ford killed a man because he doubted his word. Yes, they acquitted him—in those days it was not considered wrong to kill when your word was doubted.
“Did your mother have no rights?”
“In those days married women were goods and chattel. She had no rights left alone, she married a step down, Haulin her overseer.
When I grew older I educated my little brothers and sisters. Carrie was the smartest she studied too hard and died from brain fever.
Molly married Duley a seventh day Adventist preacher named Threlkeld. No account.
At the age of nineteen I met on a visit during vacation (I believe he had graduated) my best friends sister Mary Hodge she was sixteen we were married and very happy for one year when her little baby Mary was born both died the mother puerperal fever. I went to New Orleans to college.
I ran for the legislature and was elected before I was of the legal age and took my seat. I was sheriff but never hanged a man I always paid some one else to do it. It was all in politics. I found a man could not be honest and a politician so quit. I did not think of marrying again –Cousin Jane Byers invited me down to springs and I was a great catch they told me I ought to marry Cordie Noel she was a mighty woman. We might have been happy but for her mother. I took Cordie to Fords Ferry was abused for burying her in the country and was worried to bring her to town to live. It was to my interest to stay at the Ferry. My wife died a short time after her second daughters birth of puerperal fever. I went to Chicago could not live there on account of my heath -was there and practiced law for many years. Lung trouble was feared. Your mother would never let me practice law for fear it would return. Went in the Wholesale grocery business to help Sandford & Tom Duncan they wanted my name and money to back them they had a few thousand each left from the war…I did it because I wanted to marry your mother.
Left the grocery business.
Lee & I tried tobacco in Covington but soon found neither of us knew any thing about it and quit.
George Eaton begged me after a year or so of being out of business to furnish the capital. He would do the work. I told him I knew nothing of the grocery business he said all he needed was my name and money. He had saved $5000. I could put in my own book keeper etc.
I do not want you to tell your mother I told you the name of KT she is very proud. My fathers marriage was a trial to all of them and she hates old T. here in the city so.
Mama told me of KT after papas death & said just what papa had said. She told me her mother was very proud of papa and that she was devoted to her brother Philip. She named her oldest son “James Philip.”. (Uncle Jim) Papa was very wealthy so was cousin Sherwood they were the only two Fords left. I have a letter from Papa to Mama dated in 188? Asking her to be good to sister if he died and stating his estate was worth Five hundred thousand dollars. The letter he had always in his purse and to be read after his death. Mama gave me the old purse containing $15. And the letter when Papa died. You know Papa told me he lost several hundred thousands in the panic but be glad my daughter I had it to lose.2
