Father | Joseph Kearley |
Birth | John Joseph Kearley was born in December 1866 in Sunnyside, Newfoundland. |
Death | He died on 27 July 1960 at age 93 in Herring Neck, Newfoundland. |
Note | John Joseph Kearley. John Kearley is listed in the 1921 census as living in Sunnyside with his four children He is listed as a fisherman and a Methodist. John was one of the nineteen charter members of the Fisherman's Protective Union, per "Twenty Years of the FPU". John was baptized on January 8, 1867 per PANL v. 85. Rex Kearley's family sheet lists him as having been born in 1866. The 1921 Census lists him as being born in 1886, which is clearly wrong, but could be a typo for 1866. He was aged 93 years, 7 months at his death, which supports the 1866 age. John was the lightkeeper at Baccalie Island around the turn of the century. Per Wilson Tuffin, John left the Methodist Church (in which he had been very active) because they hired a poor man in the area, who was a member of the church, to be the janitor. This man was behind in his church dues, and the congregation refused to hire him because of this. John tried to sway the congregation to hire the man, but they refused. John then indicated that he would no longer be a member of the church because of this decsion, and walked out. After the death of his mother Miriam, John renounced his share of the residuary estate of John Esau Miles, and his share went to his children Frank, Carrie, Evelyn and Mina. A John Kerley was an elector in Merrits Harbour in 1889, per voting lists in the Thomas Peyton Collection at PANL. He was listed as 25 years of age. John was an elector in Herring Neck in 1895. Per Don Kearley, John had a beard and used to use his beard to tickle Don's cheek. From The Twillingate Sun, February 14, 1914: In an add for American Engines: Dear Sir: - I have much pleasure in stating for the good of whom it may concern that the 6 h.p American Engine I purchased from you last spring proved satisfactory, and I feel sure that if I had not had the engine I would have come with 150 qtls. of fish less, as it was it gave me a full load, and both muself and men found the labour this year considerably [sic]. Yours truly, John Kearley, Master Schr "Marilla" From The Twillingate Sun, September 12, 1914: Marilla, Capt. John Kearley, and New Vancouver, Capt. Alfred Kearley of Herring Neck, both [returned to port] loaded. From The Twillingate Sun, September 19, 1914: Mr. Locker informs us that three Herring Neck schooners have arrived from Labrador loaded. They are Alfred Kearley, John Kearley and Abel Crossley. From The Twillingate Sun, July, 1925: Schr. Marilla cleared for the Labrador fishery, supplied by Union Trading Co. From The Twillingate Sun, October 29, 1927: Fishery at Herring Neck - Marilla, John Kearley, master, 49 tons, crew of 8, 750 barrels of fish. (This was a good showing compared to other boats.) From The Twillingate Sun, August 11, 1928: John Kearley, Marilla - 50 barrels of fish (this was poor in comparison to most other boats at that time of the season) From The Twillingate Sun, October 26, 1935: John Kearley, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kearley, and Mrs. R. Kean and child at Mrs. Cooks in Twillingate. From The Twillingate Sun, May 21, 1938: The Magistrate and Constable Clarke went to Herring Neck on Thursday morning, by Little Grace, and while there heard a trap berth case between Messrs. Kearley and Crossley. After hearing evidence for both sides the verdict went in favor of Kearley. From The Twillingate Sun, November 5, 1938: Schr. Marilla also came at same time with freight from St. John's for Hodge Brothers and J. Gillett. From The Twillingate Sun, July 22, 1939: Schr. Marilla landed freight at G.J. Carter's on Tuesday from St. John's. |
