Around 1865 or 1870 the estate was sold to the Duke of Portland and as he wasn't liked, the family bought the Scourie Hotel on the West Coast and ran that. Some of the family went to Scourie, and some stayed in Reay and then emigrated to New Zealand. All their ten children were born before they went to Caithness. Henry married a Miss A. Campbell and we found his tombstone in Scourie Cemetery. Patricia Turnbull.

Anecdote | This is a very tough one. Both persons are listed twice in the International Genealogical Index, once as males, then as females. I have not been able to locate any children which could have been born to this couple, that might have given clues to clearing up the problem of who was of what gender. Since Arthur's name is of male reference, I have left him as sex unknown and Henry as the male. .tca/sch

Anecdote | , in New Zealand in 1883 When in 1883??? John Scott Turnbull and his wife Elizabeth McLaren and the rest of the family arrived in New Zealand, it would only be natural the they made for Oamaru where the younger brother William was. No doubt he had written and told them of his farming enterprise in NZ and maybe that was what decided them to come to NZ. There were also Caverhills and Scotts in the area and these names seem to be linked to the Turnbulls in hereditary names over the years. Patricia Turnbull1 |
