Other Life Events

Anecdote (fam). They settled in Wegatchie (previously known as Howard's Mills and Church's Mills), Town of Rossie, where Thomas was a farmer and also owned a saw mill that could produce about a million and a half feet of lumber per year, and a shingle mill that could produce 20,000 shingles a day. Thomas served as a trustee of School District #3, Town of Rossie, and in the 1873-1874 business directory of Rossie is listed as Justice of the Peace. While serving as justice of the Peace, Thomas witnessed his son Corydon's enlistment into the Civil War. Thomas enjoyed writing poetry; a collection of his writings has been compiled and published by a great grandson, J. Ramsey Michaels and can be viewed on the Internet at thomasturnbull.org.
After their deaths, Sarah E. continued to live in the family home until her death in 1914. In 1915 Corydon (now age 71 and a widower) returned from South Dakota and spent the summer with his widowed sister Anna Ramsey from Syracuse in the old Turnbull home which had been closed since the death of their sister Sarah.
Thomas and Elizabeth were buried in the Wegatchie cemetery . There is a marker also placed in the new Oxbow Cemetery for Thomas. The marker in the new cemetery was erected by Kathryne Ramsey, his grand daughter, with the inscription, "Anchored Safe Beyond The Skies," a line from one of Thomas' poems. Supposedly, Thomas' remains, as much as could be found, were transferred to the new marker in Oxbow. It is not for sure, that Elizabeth's grave was found and her remains transferred along with Thomas'.1

Obituary

Died in Rossie, N.Y., Aug. 7, 1872.

Of heart disease, Adam Turnbull aged 60 years.

Mr. Turnbull was one of the pioneers of Rossie, being one of five brothers who emigrated from Roxburghshire, Scotland, to that town, in 1820 where he has resided ever since. Possessed with much public spirit and ability, he early became identified with the leading interests of the town, and from time to time received from the hands of his fellow men important public trusts.

Endowed with those high and noble traits of character which are the characteristics of his race, he was not only held in high esteem and respect by a large circle of friends, but by all who enjoyed the pleasure of his acquaintance. The disease which terminated his earthly career, although of short duration, was one of great suffering and anguish. During his illness he seemed to enjoy much of his Saviour's presence; Christ and his righteousness was the great theme of his conversation, and clothed as we have reason to believe he was, in that same righteousness, death was to him but the portal to eternal joys.1

AnecdoteMichael and a twin brother James were born 30 September 1810 and baptized 28 October 1810 in Hobkirk, Roxburghshire, Scotland. James later died of Typhoid.

As a youngster Michael became engaged in the lumber business, going to Canada, where he distinguished himself for his energy and business capacity. Records show that he lived near his sister Isabella Bryden while there. Returning to St. Lawrence County, he was connected with his brother, Thomas, in the sawmill in Wegatchie.

Michael became a U.S. citizen 8 October 1834 in Madison County, New York. In 1835 he married Margaret Beatty Laidlaw, a daughter of Alexander and Elspeth Mitchell Laidlaw. (Margaret B. is a sister to Isabel Laidlaw, wife of brother, Adam). Soon after their marriage, Michael began acquiring land in 1837 for his Oxbow homestead farm. Additional land was acquired over the years including the adjoining farm of his brother Adam after the death of Adam's descendants, The farm is still in the Michael Turnbull family line today.

In 1871 Michael purchased a residence in Oxbow, across from the Presbyterian Church, where he died nine years later at the age of 70. His wife Margaret died in 1844 at the age of 73. They are buried in the new Oxbow Cemetery.

Michael and his wife Margaret had eight sons:

Michael lived to see all seven of his remaining sons marry and prosper. ; His first son, Thomas Laidlaw never married and died Christmas Day in 1863 at the age of 27. The three sons, Alexander, William and Michael had a boot and shoe manufacturing business in Elmira, New York. Adam was in the agricultural implement business in Rochester, New York and had two sets of twins. (The first set died at birth with their mother). James B. had five children. John M. had two children. James and John had an insurance agency in Utica. (The Turnbull Insurance Agency still exists today!). Andrew F. lived on and operated the old homestead farm outside Oxbow and had four children

It is believed that the last time Michael saw all seven of his sons together was at his home in November 1876 (Presumably for Thanksgiving). Their ages ranged from 20 to 38 years at that time.1
