Anecdote | SirRobert James Turnbull was the commander of the H.M.S. Bellerforon. During the Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Nelson was supposed to have transferred the flag to the Bellerforon when his ship sank according to family oral history. Nelson was supposed to have died in his arms. He is the oldest authentic member of this branch of the Turnbull clan. No mention of this has been recorded in the history of the battle, but there is a Turnbull Lane in Gibraltar.2,1 |

Anecdote | John Aitken spent the early part of his life in Greenock. He married Euphemia Pender Gallacher April 22, 1869 in Glasgow. She was the daughter of James Gallacher and Agnes Brisbane. She was born in 1842 in Glasgow and died September 27, 1902 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. John was also a sugar refiner and manager of one of the Blair, Reed, and Steel refineries. He was later sent to London to rescue a property there where he lived on Campbell road for four years. He then returned to Greenock and subsequently was sent to Halifax, Nova Scotia to rehabilitate a refinery there. Later he built a new refinery in Dartmouth, N.S. and one in Monktown, New Brunswick. Before his death he was head of the entire Canadian Sugar Refining Industry. His son, David Rowan, developed the business even further after his father's death. The offices were located on the corner of Duke and Hollis (235-237 Hollis) in Halifax. The main offices were located at 66 Virginia Street in Glasgow. The family must have come to Halifax sometime after 1882. They lived at 49 E. Young Street, an area damaged in an explosion which has all been rebuilt. John died in Halifax September 3, 1905.1 |
