Christening | William Turnbull was christened on 21 July 1751 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.1 |
Marriage | He married Anne in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.2 |
Anecdote | It is quite possible that William was a glassmaker, in Newcastle. Apprenticeships (the only way into glassmaking usually) were reserved for the sons of glassmakers. Whether he and or his son had their own glass manufacturing business, I don't know. |

Father | Thomas Lee |
Birth | Mary Lee was born on 9 August 1793 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. |
Baptism | She was baptized on 28 October 1793 at St Andrew's Parish church in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. |
Marriage | She married Thomas Turnbull, Sr., on 7 February 1820 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Mary Lee was, age 26, Thomas Turnbull, Sr., was, age 36.1 |
Anecdote | I found her surname in the baptism records of her two last children, in Billingham, Co.Durham, in 1837, when Thomas was working at the Haverton Hill glassworks. I have kept the spelling as it was in the baptismal record but a name like that can vary greatly. If she was born in Newcastle abt 1793 as she gives in the 1861 census, or out of Co.Durham in about 1892 as in the 1841 census, then this yields the above birth/baptism information from IGI. The nearest alternative is the same name, town and church for a baptism 17 Jan 1790, father John LEE, mother Jane. I prefer the former. 1841 census: see Thomas her husband 1851 census: not found despite extensive search. I wonder if she is a widow by then and has gone out of Co.Durham/Northumberland with her children Matthew, James and Mary who are also missing off the census. Matthew would be about 26 (a mature glassmaker?), James 16 and Mary 14. 1861: Heaton Street, Byker, Newcastle She is living with her son George and his wife and 8 children; the household includes her unmarried son James. She's a widow, age 68, b. Newcastle abt 1793 She seems to have died by 1871? |

BIC Jane, wife, BIC Hannah 7, BIC Mary Jane 2, BIC **Thos TURNBULL, 20, glassmaker, BIC (Thomas is probably lodging. HIs parents and the rest of his family have gone to Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, after his father was working at the Haverton Hill glassworks in the late 1830s. The glassworks was struggling to remain open at this stage, an economic downturn having hit the country.) He and his brother George seem to have formed an attachment to the area, being old enough to set out on their own when their family left for Bishopwearmouth. Although George is found with the family in 1841 census, he returned to H.H. where he was married and had some children. Thomas Lee TURNBULL may have married Mary Ann OPPLEBY in 1841 (after the census) (BMD Oct-Dec 1841, Stockton District, Vol 24) 1851: West Street, Stranton (now part of Hartlepool), Co. Durham. In 1846 Thomas was still working as a glassmaker in Haverton Hill because there is a baptism for a child who may have died in infancy: 20 Jun 1846, Ann Turnbull. The record says he was a glassmaker. The glassworks was struggling to survive. His wife may have died and he remarried before 1861? Also it seems that his daughters Mary J and Ann both died? 1861: Pipewellgate (north side), Gateshead, Co. Durham Thomas TURNBULL, Head, M, 40, Flint Glassmaker, b. Newcastle abt 1821 Maria, wife, M. 43, b. Lynn, Norfolk, abt 1818 John T., son, 19, Iron Moulder, b. Stockton on Tees, 1842 At this time his brothers George, Matthew and James were living on the other side of the river in Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, where they must have owned a glassworks in or near Byker. 1871: Bridge Street, Pipewellgate, Gateshead Thomas TURNBULL, Head, M, 50, Licensed Victualler, b. Newcastel abt 1821 Maria, wife, M, 50, b. Lynn, Norfolk, abt 1821 plus a servant It was quite common for a glassmaker to turn to having a pub for a while during his life. Newcastle abt 1821 Maria, wife, M, 62, b. Norfolk, abt 1819 plus a servant. This is the first address for Thomas near where his brothers have already been running the Cornhill Glassworks (since the late 1850s.?) in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland He and his brother Matthew are 'glass manufacturers' at this time, with George still simply described as flint glass maker. 1891: 14 Wolsley Terrace, North Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland Thomas L. TURNBULL, head, 70, gentleman, b. Newcastle Maria, wife, 72, lady, b. Lynn, Norfolk He seems to have retired and be a respected person. His brother Matthew seems to have taken over the responsibility for the Cornhill Glassworks, together with his son, and George and his sons. By 1891 Matthew has moved out to a no-doubt pleasant suburban village (Fulwell) away from the grime of Bishopwearmouth, where his son followed by 1901. |
