Anecdote | Married Margaret about 1845. Lived in Haverton Hill like his elder brother Thomas, until about 1847/8 (the date approximately when the glassworks was under Cutheberton, Carter and Thorman, then soon bought by Jas. COUPER and run by WALTON). It may have been the new regime under COUPER which stimulated George and Thomas Lee to move away? The family may have taken a partnership in the Carr Hill glassworks, Gateshead, about this time and George came to manage it? Sheriff Hill is a neighbouring area to Carr Hill today, to the south of modern Gateshead city centre. His brother Matthew was also in Gateshead around this time and may have been a partner. 1851: Sheriff Hill, Gateshead, Co. Durham George TURNBULL Head, 28, Flint Glass Maker, b. Birth | James Turnbull was born on 8 September 1836 at Carr Hill in Gateshead, Durham, England. |
Baptism | He was baptized on 26 February 1837 at Haverton Hill in Billingham, Co. Durham, England. |
Anecdote | James was born in September 1836 in Carr Hill, Gateshead, before the move to Haverton Hill near Billingham, Co. Durham. His father managed the Haverton Hill glassworks, probably from its first opening in about 1835/6, until about 1840/41, and had two children baptized there on the same day in 1837, James and his last child Mary who was born in Haverton Hill. James appears with his family in 1841 in Bishopwearmouth, age 6. I cannot find him in 1851, which seems to be a time of perhaps a bit of chaos in the family just after Thomas Snr died? James' two eldest brothers are old enough to become independent. Nor can I find Matthew, the next eldest, who at about 26 would be old enough to be supporting his mother and younger siblings. Perhaps they went outside Co. Durham/Newcastle for a short time. 1861 He has joined in the large household of his brother George in Byker, Newcastle, where his mother is also. See under George. He is a 'Flint Glass Maker', (same as George), and age 25, Unm. B. Carr Hill, 1836. I have not been able to find him in later censuses. |

The family stayed there until about 1840/41. She appears on the census in 1841 with her family, wrongly given the age of 2. She should have been shown as 4.
