Biography | Biography appears on Find a Grave. Turner B. Turnbull, Jr., a leading member of the Choctaw Tribe, was born on November 22, 1851. Full Blood Choctaw. He received his education in the Choctaw National School at Mt. Pleasant, in Blue County, OK He studied the problems that effected the Choctaw people and was active in public affairs - schools.
On April 26th, 1879 he married Adeline Dwight. He served several terms as Representative from Blue County in the Choctaw Legislature. He was elected Ranger and served in this office until 1888, when he was elected District Trustee of the Third Judicial District of the Choctaw Nation. In 1892 he was elected Sheriff of Blue County and served in that office for four years. After that, he was appointed by Governor Green McCurtain as enumerator of Indigent Choctaws for Blue County before his agricultural experiences. He operated a large stock farm and also had many acres in cultivation and was active in business affairs, being a director of the First National Bank of Bokchito, OK. He died at Caddo, Oklahoma, on the 20th day of April, 1908 and was buried in the Turnbull Cemetery on his farm about 10 miles East of Caddo, Oklahoma. |

Biography | Biography appears on Find a Grave. Walter was full-blood Choctaw and a member of one of the proudest of Choctaw families. His grandparents, Turner B. Turnbull, Sr. and Angelico “Jerico” Perkins, walked the infamous Choctaw Trail of Tears from Mississippi to the new Indian Territory.
Turner Brashears Turnbull, Sr. was elected Choctaw Supreme Judge in 1849. He served in several other offices and then was elected District Chief. Jerico’s brother, David Perkins, also was a highly respected Choctaw judge.
Walter’s father, Turner B. Turnbull, Jr., a full-blood Choctaw, was Sheriff of Blue (Bryan) County, Indian Territory, and head of the famous Choctaw Lighthorsemen (1890-98), who helped bring law and order to the Choctaw Nation before statehood. He also served in the Choctaw House of Representatives.
His mother, also a full blood Choctaw, was Adeline Dwight; her father was the famous Presbyterian minister Timothy Dwight. In the 1930s, Ben Hunter Dwight, her nephew, was appointed Choctaw Chief. |

His wife Mary Gilkey was a librarian at the University for several years. Charles' children were Charles, Jr., Mary L., and John E. John Edward, also a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, became an engineer and was employed many years by the Corps of Engineers in Tulsa. Because of health problems with tuberculosis, most of Charles' life was spent in Arizona. Perhaps because of the stress placed on an already fragile life when Charles came home for Bill's funeral in August of 1927, he died nine days later at only 38--Frankie James
Obituary: August 26, 1927 Chas. Turnbull Dies Tuesday at 6:30 A.M. Tuesday morning at 6:30 Chas. Turnbull died suddenly at the home of his sister Mrs. John L. Boland. Mr. Turnbull came here a week ago from Arizona to attend the funeral of his brother. He was to start back Tuesday. The body was embalmed and held to await the arrival of his wife and children from Arizona. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Turnbull cemetery. About midnight he awoke Mr. Boland who found him suffering severe hemorrhages. Medical aid brought temporary relief, until early morning when death put an end to all struggle. Chas. Turnbull was 40 years of age; he was born on the Turner Turnbull place east of Caddo, attended local schools and Oklahoma University at Norman. He went to Arizona in the hope of staying the ravages of a lingering malady that seized him early in youth. He is survived by his wife and three children, mother, sister, and brother. The friends of the family offer sincere condolence in the double bereavement. |

Last Thursday night at Hugo, Mr. W. P. Turnbull and Miss Ruth Park were married by a justice of the peace. They returned to the Turnbull home ten miles east of Caddo and are making their home there.
The bride’s home is at Blue, Okla., but she has been teaching school several terms at Turnbull school. She is a modest, accomplished young woman.
The groom is well known to everybody, having been born at the old Turnbull home. He is engaged in farming and cattle raising.
The marriage was somewhat of a surprise to the friends of the couple and they stole a march on homefolks by going to Hugo. Of course everyone will wish the young couple every happiness in this life.

W. P. Turnbull Died Sunday Evening at 8
W. P. Turnbull died Sunday evening at 8 o'clock after an illness of some two years, at his home twelve miles east of Caddo. The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 at his home; the remains were buried in Turnbull Cemetery.
Deceased is survived by his wife, four small children, two brothers, Walter J. and Charles, a sister, Mrs. John L. Boland, his mother, Mrs. Turner Turnbull, and other relatives.
W. P. Turnbull was 37 years of age, a son of Turner Turnbull, a prominent man in Choctaw Nation affairs. He was owner of large tracts of land and engaged in cattle and farm operations on a large scale. He was a progressive enterprising citizen, a kind husband and father, a useful and helpful neighbor.
The large attendance and floral offering at the funeral attested to the esteem in which he was held by the community.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. J. Raulston, an old time friend of the family who came to this country forty years ago as superintendent of Armstrong Academy. |
