| Biography | Biography appears on Find a Grave. Robert Osborne Sumter was from humble beginnings, moving to the Indian Territory as a teenager with his parents about 1887. They moved into Bogy Depot before moving to Atoka. His personal life was tragic with the loss of his first wife and child. He remarried and struggled with living conditions before he joined the U. S. Marshall Service. He was gunned down by men who were running a still operation on August 9, 1933. U. S. Marshall Henry Cooper quickly rounded up the guilty parties. Thus ended the life of U.S. Marshall Robert O. Sumter. He was laid to rest at Westview Cemetery by family and friends. He was the 6th great Nephew of Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter, which Fort Sumter was named for. The General was knicknamed "The Gamecock General". |
