Obituary | Her Obituary was published, on Find a Grave. Second wife of Rev. John P. Turnbull, a prominent member of the Choctaw Nation; they married Sep 1868 per her Dawes Testimony. Harriet's father was a Quartermaster's clerk at the old Fort Towson. He was a first cousin to the noted educator, Frances E. Willard. Their adopted daughter Belle lost her parents at an early age and was adopted by John P. Turnbull and his second wife, Harriet. Rev. Turnbull was Head Master at Goodland Indian Orphanage and Presbyterian minister at Goodland (1866 - 1890). The Goodland Mission Station was started in 1835 with permanent missionary station status being granted in 1848. In 1850 the first school was started by Rev. and Mrs. Oliver Porter Stark. Rev. Turnbull was also a Choctaw Supreme Court Judge, National Treasurer for the Tribe and Superintendent of Choctaw Tribal Schools. He died on May 08, 1894, at Goodland and is buried there. Harriet had a younger sister Frances, who taught at the Goodland School (1872 - 1875). After losing her first husband, Fannie married a second time to the Rev. Wilson Jones, the first Superintendent of Goodland Indian Orphanage (1894 - 1898). Both are buried at Goodland Cemetery. |

Belle was given up for adoption at an early age; it occurred at a big camp meeting at Goodland church when Mrs. Turnbull saw the child and asked to adopt her. Belle's biological parents were William and Elizabeth Rector of Jackson County, I.T. (see Dawes Choctaw enrollment card #1426). William Frye was remembered as a full-blood Choctaw. Elizabeth Frye later remarried; she was enrolled as Elizabeth Rector Durant, 1/2 Choctaw (Roll #10109); died July 1915. ADOPTION PETITION Kiamichi County, Choctaw Nation Probate Court, Clear Spring Court Ground November 1877 Petition of John Turnbull and Hattie E. Turnbull for adoption of Isabella. OBITUARY Mrs. J.D. Wilson Died Tuesday One of best known residents of Fort Towson died at Paris hospital; Member of Mississippi Choctaw Family who had long resided in Fort Towson Mrs. J.D. Wilson died at the hospital in Paris, Texas, Tuesday night, death being due to child birth. The deceased was one among the widely known women of Choctaw county, having been Miss Belle Turnbull of Mississippi Choctaw family. She was married to J.D. Wilson many years ago and was the mother of a very large family. The family has resided since marriage at Fort Towson where Mr. Wilson is one of the builders and pushers, known throughout this entire section of the state. The remains will be laid to rest at Fort Towson either Thursday or Friday, announcement of the funeral not being made at noon today as all of the relatives expected had not been heard from. Mrs. Wilson was 43 years of age, and had spent the greater portion of her time in what is now Choctaw county. Towson, died Sunday morning at Paris after a few days siege of pneumonia. Mr. Wilson was taken ill in Joplin, Mo., where he and Arthur Bowen had been to look after some valuable mining property. He took the train for home but by the time he reached Hugo he was in such a serious condition that he went though on the train to Paris and entered the hospital there. He rapidly grew worse and his wife was sent for. She arrived before he died. John Wilson has for years been one of the prominent men of this section and one of the leaders in the Choctaw Nation. He was at one time a representative in the Choctaw legislature at Tuskahoma. He was in the early fifties but was still a man of tremendous physique. He was a man of strong character and his natural force and build was such as to gain him notice wherever he appeared. His influence in his home neighborhood was powerful and his voice was always welcome in council. The funeral was held in Ft Towson this afternoon [December 20, 1915] and was attended from over a vast territory. Among those attending from here were: Attorney Warren, B.D. Jordan, Sheriff Lee Loftin, Rush Record and a number of others. Besides his wife Ada, Mr. Wilson is survived by seven children and three brothers, among whom is W.W. Wilson, the banker and ranch owner of Ft. Towson.
