Witness | William Turnbull witnessed the immigration of James Turnbull and Isabella Ord on 14 December 1839 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. |
Occupation | About 1840 William Turnbull was a Shepherd. Engaged by Mr Munro Co. Bourke. 40 Pounds P.A. with rations. |
Note | He. The Old Parochial Register for Sutherland shows that William Turnboll christened on 20 March 1823 at Eddrachillis in Sutherland. Parents James and Isobella Turnboll.
With his parents and siblings William received assisted passage to Australia. He was 17 years of age and was a shepherd by trade.
William was employed as a sheep farmer on Morgiana Station when he married Mary McMillian nee McCalman. Morgiana station was approximately 14 miles from Hamilton in Victoria and was apparently the meeting place for Scottish people in the area.
The story that has passed down through the generations regarding the marriage of William and Mary is that William was a crew member on the vessel the Anne Milne which Mary and her husband William McMillan together with their children boarded for their journey to Australia. William McMillan, his father Hugh and son Donald. During the passage William befriended Mary. When the Anne Milne arrived in Portland Victoria, Mary discovered that she would not be able to disembark as she was now classified as a single woman. The Captain of the vessel decided the best thing Mary could do was to marry one of the single crew members. William came forward and the Captain married the couple with the plan that William would see Mary and her children safely ashore and settled and then he would rejoin the ship on its return voyage. William never rejoined the ship as after seeing Mary and her children wandering through the streets of Portland the didn't feel right about leaving them to cope for themselves.
It is difficult to either substantiated or deny this story as it has been passed through several branches of the family. What we do know is that the Captain never recorded the marriage in the Passenger's log book. The Victorian Pioneer Marriage Index indicates that Mary and William were married in 1856, four years after Mary's arrival in Victoria with the certificate indicating that the marriage was between William Turnbull and Mary McCalman however on the certificate it states that 'this marriage was solemnised between us, William Turnbull and Mary Turnbull'.
William died at Mt Elgin which was located in the Wimmera shire of Victoria. |
