AnecdoteIn 1908 Rex Harold Norman was reared in the District of Yahl where he was educated at the Yahl Primary School. The enrolment records show that Rex commenced in 1908. Rex spent most of his working life in the Yahl area. By trade he would be best described as an accomplished seasonal labourer in various fields. He took considerable pride in his talents and his services were eagerly sought by the local farming faternity.

Rex's skills comprised road making, potato planting and digging, wood cutting with the local factory, sowing and reaping crops, running a thrashing machine with a team of eighteen people.

He was a keen sportsman playing both cricket and football for the local Yahl Club. At cricket he was a fast medium bowler and often caused the Yahl tail to wag by hitting sixes. In 1939 the Yahl team won the premiership in the Barbour Shield. He loved fishing and was often responsible for the large bags of bream and mulloway being taken from Sandy Waterhole on the Glenelg river in Victoria.

He was an enthusiastic member of the Mount Gambier Hunt Club and took every opportunity he could to follow the hounds.

He was indeed justly proud of his team of six large baldy faced Clydesdale horses which were admired by all who saw them in action.

When the family moved into Mount Gambier Rex was the watchkeeper at the Mount Gambier Spinning Mills where he later moved into the packing area. He then obtained a labourer's position at the South Australian Woods and Forest Mill where he remained until his retirement.
