AnecdoteIn Historical accounts and family members references, this gentleman as " Uncle Johnnie". The first of the brothers to actually arrive in America via Canada, in June 1837, bringing with him his widowed mother Ellen.
John and Margaret never had children of their own. They raised the following other family members, and orphans;
nephew William B. son of brother Robert and his wife Margaret Graham,
Henry Hall Oliver, Margaret's little brother,
Lusetta Woodward, orphan, who married a Murray, as a widow she married David Turnbull son of William and CatherineTurnbull . Luzette Woodward, orphaned at age three, was the daughter of Smith and Sara Woodward.
Jane, Thomas, Mary Ann, and William Oliver Rule, these children were the orphans of Robert and Charlotte (Oliver ) Rule, she was the daughter of Thomas Oliver and Margaret Fife and sister to Margaret, Johns wife. Robert and Charlotte died at a very young age.
Mary and Martha "Mattie" Phalen were orphans, I found nothing on their parents.
1880 census shows John a farmer, his wife Margaret keeping house and Martha "Mattie" Phalen still with them age 15 years.
1880 census for William Oliver Rule, was born 28 August 1850 in Elmira, Illinois, his parents Robert Thomas Rule and mother Charlotte Oliver. Married Anna Buckley Kay September 22, 1869 in Elmira and his death is recorded as 24 July 1933 in Ottawa, Franklin county, Kansas.

Gail Turnbull Bell states;
"The Elmira Centennial & Scottish Pioneers 1838-1938 written by Dr. John H. Oliver, Chairman says in reference to John Turnbull (TCA #52944) that "His brother Robert came to Stark County in the winter of 1838-39. He bought land about one mile east of Elmira, now the Orville Murray farm and lived there until his death November 23, 1874, at the age of seventy-five years.
Among his children were William B, Thomas, John G., Sophia, and Helen born in Scotland--Robert, James, Adam & George after coming to America."

Speaking of John Turnbull again--Dr. Oliver says: He and his wife had no children of their own, but his nephew, William B Turnbull, and her brother, Henry Oliver, lived with them for years and they reared the following orphans: Lusetta Woodward, Jane, Thomas, Anna & William Rule, and Mary and Mattie Phelan.""3
