Birth | Thomas F. Oliver, Sr., was born on 4 May 1785 in Roxburghshire, Scotland. |
Immigration | He immigrated between 1838 and 1839 to Illinois, United States. Winter, with John Turnbull and many others |
Anecdote | All of the original founders were buried in the Osceola Grove Cemetery, after building a new church and cemetery in Elmira, all the founders bodies were relocated to the new cemetery. |
Anecdote | "Accordingly on June 14, 1837, Thomas Oliver, his wife, Margaret, their ten children, their son-in-law--John Turnbul, his mother, Helen "Ellen" Brydon Turnbull, his brother Robert Alexander Turnbull Jr. & Robert's son, William B. and younger children, Robert Rule and John Graham, and possibly other Grahams, took the long look, and for most of the group the last look at Bonnie Scotland as they sailed away for their Promised Land.
The voyage was six weeks in length. (During the first week, Queen Victoria came to the throne of the United Kingdom.) They carried their own provisions and took turns cooking. Some of the party, were severely sea sick, among them the two year old John Oliver, who was too weak to walk when Quebec was reached.
The group had arrived in America but the place of location was yet to be decided. Robert Turnbull and family and his mother Helen Brydon Turnbull, determined to remain for a time at least in Canada, The Oliver's inclined toward Massilon, Ohio, where they had friends from Scotland but John Turnbull who was considered the leader of the party, had continued to read on shipboard of Illinois and later had talked with a land agent who urged that the party make no decision until they had seen the prairie state and moreover, the "poet" in Unle Johnny Turnbull was driving him on to see for himself the marvelous beauty of the land of which by his Scottish ingleside (?) he had read in the "Edinburgh Rview." He and his wife decided that though the others might wish to remain at least for the winter in Ohio, they would go at once to Illinois, but when they announced their decision, Thomas Oliver said, "We started together, and we will keep together", and thus the Oliver's continued their journey westward. With them came Robert Rule and John Graham. All except Robert Turnbull, his wife and their family and his mother Ellen journeyed up the St. Lawrence River, then across the country to Niagara Falls, thence Buffalo, NY to Chicago.
Anyway--this goes on and on but it appears that Robert Turnbull came to Elmira a year later than his brother--John or Uncle Johnnie as everyone called him. I had Brian change the date of Robert's arrival from 1873 to 1837 awhile back but now it appears that it should read--"the winter of 1838-39."
Wm B would have been around 18 yrs of age if his 1819 birth is correct so I wonder if he went with Uncle John and the scouting party to Chicago and then Stark County or remained in Quebec with his family.
On Family Search.org the RLDS site they have the Naturalization document T-651 for a Robert Turnbull--Country of Birth--Scotland--When born--Nov. 1, 1799--Date & Port of arrival in U.S--Chicago September 23, 1837--Date of naturalization--Oct 9, 1844.
There is also a Naturalization Document for John Turnbull with the same info--birth dates match up, etc.
