Other Life Events

AnecdoteHe was a Farmer at Canimbla ,near Cowra with his son John.
His death certificate(information supplied by his son, John) said that he was a gardener at the time of his death and that his father had been an engineer. It said that he was from Shrewsbury and had been in the colony 39 years(this means he would have left England 1856(?).At his marriage William Henry Wilson was certified that he was a railway porter living at Kenyon ,Liverpool and that his wife, Mary nee Swain was a servant living at Abercromby Square, Liverpool.
It was initially believed that he was the John Wilson born to John and Mary, baptised at St.Mary's Church, Shrewsbury in 1817. However, that particular child died as a baby. There were another John Wilson born that year in Shrewsbury to a William Wilson (see name of his first born) but there is no proof at this time that he was that child.
John had served for a time,as a ship's cook, on a ship, the "Sarah Lands", 2.6.1853.The captain gave him a discharge and a character reference as being of "good character". The place of discharge was Liverpool,England. It was family folklore that he came to NSW as a ship's cook with his family. As yet have not found evidence to that effect
Came to NSW with wife and two small boys approximately 1853(1856?) and was on the goldfields at Tambooroora and Hill End at the time of Paddy Hannan being there(PH being the person purported to having found gold at KalgoorlieWA). He left for Cowra with his wife, Mary and son, John and commenced farming at Canimbla, near Cowra. His son John married Rebecca Brien and with his family left for New Zealand(the story goes that he was deciding between the New Hebrides or New Zealand and his elder sons had visited NZ and swayed the family in going there.
